For the 4th time in 4 seasons Johnny Gaudreau got the call to represent the Calgary Flames in the NHL All Star Game and for the 2nd out of those 4 seasons, he’ll be the only Flames player there. In Gaudreau’s first and second trips to the ASG he and Mark Giordano got the call (Gaudreau an alternate who played due to an injury his first season), but for another season Sean Monahan is on the outside looking in.

The new format of 3 on 3 makes it harder to pick teams, but it takes one of the most exciting parts of the game and makes it it’s centerpiece and Johnny Gaudreau certainly fits that mold. He’s extremely talented, but he’s also a marketable face for the league. Popularity aside, what about Mony? Monahan clearly has the chops to be there (20G 20A) and is there anyone else you’d rather have in a 3 on 3 format than Monahan?

The Flames also had 3 other players who’ve been playing well, that in a traditional ASG format might have garnered some consideration: Mike Smith, Mark Giordano and a far outside horse in Micheal Ferland. Without Smith, the Flames aren’t even sniffing the playoffs this season. His .940+ Save% on the road is phemominal. While not having the point producing season he’s had in the past, Mark Giordano is having one of his best defensive seasons in years. Where this falls short is that the 3 on 3 format isn’t geared toward defenceman who you know, actually play defence. And what’s not to love about Micheal Ferland’s season? He’s 1 goal behind Sean Monahan for the team lead and he’s one of the hottest players in the NHL over the last month.

In the end, it’s all a popularity contest, but a fun one at that. So we ask you: did certain Flames get snubbed this season when it came to selecting all stars? Vote in our poll below!
