It is safe to say Matthew Tkachuk exceeded everyone’s expectations by far. Not only did he make the Flames, but he was one of their best forwards. Only Gaudreau generated more points-per-60 than Tkachuk on the team, he had one of the best CF% in the league and he managed to toss up a casual 105 penalty minutes. It is actually stunning how significant of an impact the guy managed to make at the age of 19 and it really makes you wonder what is in store for Tkachuk in the future. Definitely excited to see more from him in the years to come.

Remember the talk about whether Matthew Tkachuk would make the Calgary roster after 9 games for be sent back to London? Bahahaha. Good times. The #6 pick in the draft was a STEAL when he fell to the Flames and he did not disappoint. He scored. He fed his teammates. He drew penalties. He took penalties. He was a MAJOR part of one of Calgary’s best lines. He got under everyone’s skin. There really wasn’t much young Matthew didn’t do this season. Sure, he could cut down on some of the “borderline” stuff on the ice, but that’s just part of the package. Tkachuk, outside of Brouwer and Wideman, may have been the easy player to grade on the Flames roster this season.
FlamesMM: (A)
Between Monahan, Gaudreau, and now Tkachuk, the Flames really have been spoiled by rookies lately that have made an immediate impact in the NHL. Tkachuk not only played at the NHL level, but excelled at it. He was exactly the power forward Calgary needed and will only get better as he matures and develops. Also had 13 more points than Sean Monahan had in his rookie season. Next season will definitely be a test for him as the rest of the NHL will have to plan for him, and it’ll be up to him to adapt. I could see him moving around a bit in the lineup and may complement Sam Bennett very nicely if the Flames choose to split up the 3M line. If they don’t the 3M should be dominant again, and Tkachuk is a big part of that.
HockeyGoalieEh: (A+)
Tkachuk lead the team in possession as a pure rookie and was top five in the league. There’s really not much more that needs to be said than that.
