Calgary Flames Playoff Update (Mar 21)

Your saves keep lifting me higher and higher

It’s been two weeks since my last update, and wow do things just keep getting better and better for this team!

While they’re ten game winning streak was snapped, they’ve came right back with two more wins and have gone 17-3-1 in their last 21 games. Not bad.

Calgary is now only five points behind San Jose with two games left against them, while they’re also only five points ahead of St. Louis (2nd wild card spot) with one game left between the teams.

Well, let’s get to it, all % courtesy of sportsclubstats.com.

Calgary Flames (41-27-4, 86 pts) 1st Wild Card; Playoff Chances 98.8% (+6.4%)

Division Odds: 1st 4%, 2nd 17%, 3rd 31%, 4th 31%

Last Five Games: 4-1-0

Next Five Games: 21/03 @ WSH, 23/03 @ NSH, 25/03 @ STL, 27/03 vs COL, 29/03 vs LA

What more can be said about just how good the Flames have been over the last month or so. Every single player is pulling their weight and they’re doing amazing! They’ve won 12 of 13 and look difficult to stop. Will be interesting to see how the team adjusts their lineup down the stretch.

San Jose Sharks (42-23-6, 91 pts) 1st in Pacific; Playoff Chances 99.99% (N/A)

Division Odds***: 1st 75%, 2nd 17%, 3rd 6%, 4th 2%

Last Five Games: 2-3-0

Next Five Games: 21/03 @ MIN, 24/03 @ DAL, 25/03 @ NSH, 28/03 vs NYR, 30/03 @ EDM

Why do I include the Sharks? Well I mean, I never thought the Flames would make a push for a divisional spot, and now here we are. The Flames and Sharks are only separated by 5 points, and with two head-to-head matchups left, anything is possible. Meanwhile Edmonton and Anaheim are only four points behind.

Edmonton Oilers (39-24-9) 2nd in Pacific; Playoff Chances 99.9% (+0.2%)

Division Odds: 1st 18%, 2nd 39%, 3rd 29%, 4th 12%, ***

Last Five Games: 4-1-0

Next Five Games: 22/03 @ ANA, 23/03 @ COL, 25/03 vs COL, 28/03 vs LA, 30/03 vs SJ

Throw the Oilers in there too as the three team race for the second spot and home ice advantage has really heated up over the last few weeks. Edmonton has been playing some good hockey of late, and may be tough to catch down the stretch as they have two games against both Colorado and Vancouver.

Anaheim Ducks (38-23-11, 87 pts) 3rd in Pacific; Playoff Chances 99.8% (+4.3%)

Division Odds: 1st 7%, 2nd 30%, 3rd 31%, 4th 23%

Last Five Games: 3-1-1

Next Five Games: 22/03 vs EDM, 24/03 vs WPG, 26/03 vs NYR, 28/03 @ VAN, 30/03 @ WPG

The Ducks are neck and neck with the Flames right now and are only separated by a single point. Anaheim has had three close games lately, all being decided by 2-1 scores. Wednesday’s game in Edmonton will have huge implications.

Los Angeles Kings (34-31-7) 9th in West; Playoff Chances 4.1% (-36.2%)

Thanks for trying LA, but you’re not catching the Flames now with 10 games to go and probably not even making the playoffs. Sorry Jarome.

We’ll be back sometime in the near future for one of the last playoff updates of the season as the Flames continue their push towards the big dance.
