The first couple of months of the 2017-2018 Western Hockey League season are now in the books and so far many prospects are impressing their respected NHL clubs that drafted them. Let’s take a look at the Flame’s first round pick this year, Juuso Välimäki of the Tri-City Americans.

Välimäki, a native of Nokia, Finland is currently in his third season with Tri-City and so far the 19 year old defenceman is off to a hot start despite missing a few games due to injury. Through 16 games Välimäki has tallied 17 points, 5 goals and 12 assists, which puts him fifth in points on the team.

Despite being injured, Välimäki consistently has been contributing to the team, and the Americans find themselves in the top wildcard spot for the playoffs with 31 points and many games left to play.

While Välimäki didn’t make the NHL roster this year, look for him to have a good training camp next year with the team. While he may require some seasoning in Stockton, there is no question this young player has a bright future in hockey. His athletic ability is near the top of the list, compared to others in the WHL, and his stats confirm that he has the ability to be an incredible asset to the Flames organization. Remember the name Juuso Välimäki, you’ll be seeing a lot of him in the future.
