The Calgary Flames and San Jose Sharks met tonight for the third meeting of the season between the two clubs and first in Calgary. The two teams split the earlier meetings this season with Calgary winning the first game 3-2, before the Sharks handily won the second one 4-1.

The Flames maintained their lineup from the last game as Chad Johnson got another start in net. Aaron Dell got the start for the Sharks who is from Airdrie, Alberta.

1st Period

The game would start off with a long stretch of play without a lot of shots or opportunities. Then we’d see something very rare and interesting happen.

It seems as though the Sharks made a mistake with their lineup card and had Mirco Mueller in the game despite him being scratched on the card, and as a result he was kicked out of the game. The Sharks had Paul Martin dressed on the card even though he was the one scratched. Very weird!

The Sharks would get the first powerplay when Michael Frolik slashed a Shark entering the Flames zone.

San Jose would capitalize on the man advantage with Logan Couture deflecting a Brent Burns shot to give the Sharks a 1-0 lead.

The Flames would answer back with Michael Frolik burying a rebound off a Deryk Engelland shot. Matthew Tkachuk gets an assist as he hopefully aims to start a new point streak.

The Sharks would get back in front 2-1 when a point shot from Brent Burns got through a crowd and found the back of the net.

The opening period ends with the Sharks ahead 2-1 of the Flames and shots 12-8 for San Jose.

2nd Period

Matthew Tkachuk would be whistled for a penalty for essentially stealing Brent Burns’ stick but the Flames would kill it off.

Calgary would then get their own powerplay late in the period as the Flames aimed to tie the game.

The Flames would score on the powerplay to tie the game with Matthew Tkachuk deflecting a Mikael Backlund shot. 2-2 game with 32 seconds left in the second.

The second period ends with the game tied at two, and the shots 19-17 in favour of San Jose.

3rd Period

The Flames would be without Micheal Ferland in the third period as he took an awkward fall late in the second period.

We’d get some four on four halfway through the third after a pair of roughing penalties following a scrum. Nothing would come of the four on four as the teams settled into a conservative style of play.

Mikkel Boedker would be given a penalty shot with 5:27 to go after he was hauled down by TJ Brodie who was trying to accommodate for Wideman leaving Boedker at the Sharks blue line. Boedker would be expertly denied by Johnson to keep the game tied.

The Flames would get their first lead of the game with 2:19 to go when Dougie Hamilton wrisited a shot past Dell following another great shift by the Backlund line.

The Sharks would pull their goalie with about a minute and twenty seconds to go but Johnny Gaudreau would get away on a break before getting hooked down and hitting the post on the empty net.

The Flames would get a powerplay as a result for the remaining 38.4 seconds.

Mikkel Boedker would somehow find himself on another breakaway with only five seconds left but again Johnson would absolutely deny him.

And the Flames sneak out a 3-2 win over the division leading Sharks and extend their home ice winning streak to 4 games. The Sharks lost for only the second time all season when leading after the first period.

The Good

The Bad

The Ugly

The Flames record jumps to 23-19-2 and they are now four points clear of the teams below them. They’re also only one point behind the Oilers now who they play on Saturday.

The Flames next game is Friday night when they welcome Mike Cammalleri and the New Jersey Devils to town at 7:00PM.

Playing the Devils on Friday the 13th when there’s a full moon, sounds scary.
