While the likes of Mark Giordano and T.J. Brodie have been inexplicably left off WCOH rosters, Mikael Backlund was added to Sweden’s roster today.

Backlund will be replacing Detroit Red Wings forward Henrik Zetterberg, who is injured, on the roster for the September tournament.

This is a well deserved honor for the Flames centre as he had a career year in 2015-16, setting personal bests in games played (82), goals (21) and assists (26). Backlund adds to the Flames representation by joining Johnny Gaudreau, Sean Monahan, Michael Frolik, Jakub Nakladal and Jyrki Jokipakka playing in the tournament.

The World Cup of Hockey begins September 17th in Toronto.
