Team: Charlottetown Islanders

Drafted: 2014 #34 (Round 2)

Mason McDonald cracks the Top 25 Under 25 at #25 for the Calgary Flames. The 6’4 goal tender made his way to the list by way of the Charlottetown Islanders. McDonald got the lions share of the work last season, playing in 39 games and compiling a 21-15-3 record. McDonald is young and has some talent ahead of him in Stockton Heat goalie Jon Gillies. McDonald should get a shot to move up to Stockton and compete with the rehabbed Gillies this season. There is a log jam in Stockton between the pipes, but McDonald is definitely showing he is deserving of a look by the Heat and Flames staff. McDonald was a little shaky at times in his prime time feature during the World Juniors U20 tournament, but he still shows potential and he shouldn’t make it easy for the Flames when it comes time to make a decision on their future goal tender.

Future Considerations has this to say about McDonald:

“McDonald is a tall, lanky goaltender with natural coverage coupled with a strong posture between the pipes. For his size, has quick athleticism and reflexes but remains a goaltender that more often blocks pucks instead of saving pucks. (August 2013)”
