2015-16 Report Card: Sean Monahan

FlamesMM – A

While Johnny Gaudreau has the flash and looks, Sean Monahan is the essential piece that drives the Calgary Flames. Monahan is the key to Calgary become a perennial contender in the NHL. Monahan has blossomed into a leader and this season split an “A” with Dennis Wideman, and will likely have it all to himself next season based on how the offseason goes. On the ice, Monahan upped his career high in points with 63 points and will be the #1 center for the forseeable future. Monahan’s faceoff percentage also reached 51% this season which is vital as the Flames have lacked in the faceoff circle for as long as I can remember. Monahan has outperformed everybody else from his draft class thus far, and looks to continue his emergence as he earned a spot on the U23 team at the World Cup this fall. Sign him now BT! Monahan gets an A from me.

Sean Monahan has been a consistent scoring machine the last couple seasons. Of course being on a line with Johnny Gaudreau helps quite a bit. Even when they aren't scoring they are still making plays and creating a ton of chances. The dilemma that the Flames face this off-season is to try to keep the bromance alive by signing both Monahan and Gaudreau who were the top two in team scoring and who may both be looking for big money. In my mind signing these two is priority #1. I give Mony a big A!

I am a big fan of Sean Monahan. He was the first player that represented the winds of change in the Flames having a bright future when he made the Flames roster right after being drafted. The guy just scores and scores and scores. Every year he has been better than the previous season, while his point totals only increased by 1, his all around game has continued to improve with an increase in faceoff percentage and possession numbers. His chemistry with Gaudreau is a treat to watch, he continues to be a leader at a young age and it looks like he is only going to continue to get better. I could go on and on about Monahan but I already did in this article. Monahan gets an A- from me, only deductions due to a slow start. Sign him long-term!

Monahan went out there and produced and he did so fantastically. He finished third on the Flames in terms of primary points per 60 behind Joe Colborne and Johnny Gaudreau. He was astounding on the power play as well with his production there. He's certainly an important part of the Flames moving forward.

That being said, his possession numbers were rather lackluster. He was well protected by Bob Hartley, but still couldn't break 50 percent at all. He also seemed to take a step back on his penalty killing ability. He did get a fair amount of work and could probably stand to at least be taken off the P.K. Hopefully the new coach can utilize him a bit better.

Sean Monahan continues to grow as a player and this year was no exception. He had his best season as a pro with 63 points and he trailed only Johnny Gaudreau in total Power Play points (20) on the Flames. His face off percentage could probably go up as he finished at 51%, but he was taking a majority of the face offs this season. Monahan is a big body who could throw his body around a little more and the post Super Bowl incident, while not a major issue, is something a team leader should avoid. All in all Sean Monahan had another great season and was very consistent across the board in producing points. He had no major slumps and continued to develop into a piece of the Flames long term future.
