What the Flames didn’t need at any point during this 7 game stretch against the Western Conference were injuries. That’s exactly what they got in their 6-5 SO win over San Jose Thursday night. Forward David Jones took a shot to the lower body in the second and did not return. The Flames have not released any update on David Jones’ injury.

Of more pressing concern is Karri Ramo’s injury. The Flames lost their #1 goal tender in the 3rd period and he did not return as well. Flames play by play man Derek Wills had this to share from Bob Hartley after the game:

For now, Jonas Hiller will most likely be the #1. He stepped in and performed very well in the last part of the third, OT and the shoot out. He faced 8 shots and made 8 saves. That may not seem like much, but coming off the bench cold like that isn’t easy.

So what do the Flames do from here? Kevin Poulin and Joni Ortio are the Flames 2 healthy goalies in Stockton. Ortio has played in 20 games and has a record of 9-9 with a GAA of 3.36. Kevin Poulin has played in 12 games for the Heat with a record of 6-3 and a GAA of 2.72. Ortio has experience with the big club, having reeled of 5 in a row last season when he was pressed into duty. There’s also the trade route. Earlier this season Calgary was linked with Toronto and their struggling young keeper Jonathan Bernier.

The quick fix would probably be to start Hiller and call Ortio up from the minors. Calgary is heading Arizona for a game tomorrow night and it would be easier to add Ortio to the roster, even if the Heat are heading to Ontario for a game Friday night. Trades take time and it appears the Flames will need a body ASAP as they have a back to back to deal with.
