Thunder Thursday: Thunder Win One and Lose Two

The Adirondack Thunder had a rough week this past week losing two of three games at home. The Thunder won Friday night beating the Colorado Eagles 5-1 but followed that win with a loss to the Eagles on Saturday by a score of 6-2 and then lost to the Norfolk Admirals on Tuesday 4-3.

Friday’s game began with Brian Ward scoring his 11th goal of the season on the power-play from Captain Peter MacArthur and Mathieu Brodeur 4:11 into the 1st period. The Eagles would tie the game 1-1 just over the midway point of the 1st period but Peter MacArthur would give the Thunder the 2-1 lead on the power-play at 16:52 of the 1st with assists going to Patch Alber and Mathieu Brodeur. There was no scoring in the 2nd and the 3rd period was all Thunder as they got goals from Dennis Kravchenko, Mike Bergin and James Henry. Kevin Lough, Alex Wall, Brandon Baddock and Greg Wolfe all collected assists in the 3rd period fleury. Goalie Tom McCollum stopped 21 of 22 shots for the win.

Saturday was a reverse of the night before as the Eagles scored two goals in the first half of the 2nd period to take a 2-0 lead. Dennis Kravchenko scored at 11:23 of the 2nd to cut the lead to 2-1 with the assist going to Alex Wall. Colorado would score two more goals, one in the 2nd period and one just over two minutes into the 3rd period to take a 4-1 lead. Just over a minute later, Peter MacArthur brought the Thunder to within two with the assist going to Greg Wolfe making it 4-2. The Eagles scored two more goals in the 3rd to hand the Thunder the 6-2 loss. Goalie Tom McCollum stopped 35 of 40 shots in the loss.

The Thunder opened the scoring Tuesday night against the Norfolk Admirals just 2:10 into the game with James Henry scoring, assisted by Phil Lane and Alex Wall on the power-play. The Admirals scored three unanswered goals in the 1st period to take a 3-1 lead before Ty Loney scored his 10th of the season before the period ended to cut the lead to 3-2. Assists went to Alexander Fedoseyev and Brian Ward. Then, just 1:12 into the 2nd period Brian Ward evened the score 3-3 with his 12th of the season assisted from Ty Loney and Alexander Fedoseyev. They stayed knotted at three through the 3rd period and then the Admirals scored just nine seconds into overtime handing the Thunder their second straight loss. Tom McCollum stopped 14 of 18 shots.

Ty Loney continues to lead the team in scoring with 10 goals and 11 assists for 21 points in 21 games (27th in ECHL scoring).

Goalie Ken Appleby is leading the team with a 1.98 goals against average (3rd in the ECHL) and a 0.915 save percentage (16th in the ECHL). Flames prospect Mason McDonald is leading the team in wins with 7 wins (13th in ECHL) and has a 2.62 goals against average and 0.896 save percentage.

The Thunder currently sit 2nd in the North Division (3rd in the Eastern Conference) with a record of 12 wins, 4 losses, 2 overtime loss and 3 shootout losses.

The Thunder’s next action comes Saturday when the Thunder once again face the Norfolk Admirals from the Glens Falls Civic Center in Glens Falls, New York.
