Thunder Thursday: Thunder Win 3 Straight

The Calgary Flames ECHL affiliate off to a hot start.

The Adirondack Thunder have won three straight since our last update, defeating the Utah Grizzlies on back to back nights Friday and Saturday and then winning against the Florida Everblades on Tuesday in front of a packed Glens Falls Civic Center.

The Thunder defeated the Utah Grizzlies Friday night by a score of 2-1. Utah opened the scoring at 4:15 of the 1st period for an early 1-0 lead. But the Thunder would take control early in the 2nd period when Flames prospect Stepan Falkovsky scored 1:22 into the period to tie the game 1-1. Assists went to Gunnar Hughes and Mathieu Brodeur. Then at the 5:23 mark of the 2nd period, Peter MacArthur scored his 3rd goal of the season, which would be the game winner, making it the final 2-1. Assists went to James Henry and Alex Wall. Goalie Ken Appleby stopped 24 of 25 shots for his 4th win of the season.

The following night, the Thunder beat the Grizzlies again, by a score of 3-2 this time. The Thunder opened the scoring at 15:37 of the 1st period with Peter MacArthur notching his 4th goal of the season with assists from Ty Loney and Mathieu Brodeur making it a 1-0 game. Then just 57 seconds into the 2nd period, Ty Loney scored his 6th goal of the season on the power-play to give the Thunder a 2-0 lead. Assists went to Mathieu Brodeur and Alex Wall. Utah would score two goals in the 2nd period to draw even at 2-2, but in the 3rd period Dana Fraser would score the game-winner 7:35 into the period with assists fromFlames prospect Brett Pollock and Alex Wall. Calgary Flames goaltending prospect Mason McDonald stopped 32 of 34 shots picking up his 5th win of the season.

Tuesday night, the Thunder picked up their third win in a row, outscoring the Florida Everblades 3-1. There would be no scoring until Ty Loney scored his 7th goal of the season at the 3:47 mark of the 2nd period on a power-play. Assists went to Peter MacArthur and Patch Alber. Florida would tie the game 1-1 just past the midway mark of the 2nd period. Then just 31 seconds into the 3rd period, Gunnar Hughes would score the 2-1 go ahead goal and game winner with the assist coming from Brian Ward. Ty Loney would add some insurance scoring his 8th of the season from Brian Ward making the final 3-1. Mason McDonald would pick up his 6th win of the season stopping 28 of 29 shots.

The Thunder are in 1st place in the North Division and 2nd place in the Eastern Conference with 10 wins, 3 losses, 1 overtime loss and 2 shootout losses for 23 points.

Ty Loney leads the team in scoring with 8 goals and 9 assists for 17 points in 16 games (17th in ECHL scoring).

Goalie Ken Appleby is leading the team with a 1.98 goals against average (5th in the ECHL) and a 0.915 save percentage (17th in the ECHL). Flames prospect Mason McDonald is leading the team in wins with 6 wins (9th in ECHL) and has a 2.57 goals against average and 0.896 save percentage.

The Thunder’s next game is Saturday night when they once again take on the Florida Everblades at the Glens Falls Civic Center in Glens Falls, New York.
