The Calgary Inferno rolled into Brampton, Ontario to take on the Brampton Thunder this past weekend, looking to continue their already impressive hot streak to start the season. When all was said and done, the Inferno came away from Brampton with a win and a loss.
On Saturday, the Inferno fell behind early in the game with the Thunder scoring the opener just 1:15 into the 1st period and then striking again at 4:18 of the opening frame for an early 2-0 lead. The Inferno got on the board at 3:10 of the 2nd period with Blayre Turnbull scoring her 1st goal of the season with assists going to Bailey Bram and Sarah Davis to cut the deficit to 2-1. But just over two minutes later the Thunder would score to make it a 3-1 game. Just past the halfway mark of the 2nd period, Brianne Jenner would once again cut the lead to just a goal making it 3-2, scoring a power-play marker with assists from Jill Saulnier and Meaghan Mikkelson. The 2rd period would be all Brampton as they scored two more to make the final score 5-2, handing the Inferno their first loss of the season. Inferno goalie Emerance Maschmeyer stopped 34 of 38 shots.
On Sunday, Jill Saulnier opened the scoring around the midway mark of the 1st period with her 7th goal of the season with assists from Brittany Esposito and Brianne Jenner. That lead would stand until the Thunder tied the game at 11:27 of the 2nd period. But that would be all the scoring from the Thunder as Jessica Campbell would give the Inferno the lead scoring the game winning goal near the end of the 2nd period with an assist from Blayre Turnbull. Insurance goals in the 3rd period from Katelyn Gosling and Iya Gavrilova would make it a 4-1 final score with assists coming from Jessica Campbell on both goals and Iya Gavrilova on the Gosling goal as well. Goaltender Genevieve Lacasse stopped 26 of 27 shots for her 2nd win of the season.
The Inferno now lead the league with a record of 7 wins and 1 loss and are 2 points ahead of Les Canadiennes Montreal with a 6-2 record.
