Calgary Flames @ Detroit Red Wings, 5:30 PM MT, Joe Louis Arena, Detroit MI
Broadcast Schedule |
TV: RSN, TVA, Fox Sports Detroit |
Radio: Sportsnet 960 |
The Flames play game 1 of a 6 game swing through the East when they visit Detroit for an early evening Sunday night game. Calgary had won 3 in a row before Chicago came to the Saddledome and put an end to that 3 game winning streak. Even with the loss, things are looking up for the Flames. Sam Bennett had a 2 point night against Chicago and Sean Monahan looks to be getting back on track as he scored as well. The Flames seem to have a little bit of their edge back as well. Matthew Tkachuk, Micheal Ferland and Garnet Hathaway have been taking the body to teams as well and Chad Johnson has been extremely solid between the pipes. Joe Louis Arena hasn’t been kind to Calgary as they have a 27-47-10 record when visiting the Red Wings. The two teams split last season, with Detroit winning the last game they played, 4-2, on December 20th.
Detroit is in a similar predicament as the Flames this season. They’re hovering around the bottom on the Eastern Conference and have only won 2 times in their last 10. Their PK ranks 27th in the league and their PP hovers around the middle of the pack. The Red Wings have been the exact opposite of hot lately, dropping 3 in a row and being outscored 10-3 (including 2 shut outs). Here’s how the teams match-up:

Calgary Flames: Sam Bennett (C). Bennett had a 2 point night against Chicago and looked better than he has since the beginning of the season. Bennett’s track record shows he is at times very hot and at times very cold. Of Bennett’s 9 points this season, 4 have come on the road and if Calgary is going to survive this 6 game swing through the Eastern Conference, they’ll need Bennett to heat up. One area where Bennett needs to slow down is PIM. Bennett leads the Flames with 26 minutes spent sitting in the bin. In 2 games against Detroit last season, Bennett came up empty with 0 points.

Detroit Red Wings: Thomas Vanek (F). Vanek will return to the Red Wings lineup for the first time in 11 games. Vanek sustained a hip injury that held him out, but before that he was playing inspired hockey. In 7 games the forward had 8 points and was a steady +5.
