The Calgary Flames have whittled down their camp roster even further, cutting nine players in the hours before their fourth preseason game. Five goalies, 18 defencemen, and 26 forwards still remain at camp for a total of 49 players.
The majority of the Flames' cuts have been assigned to their AHL affiliate, the Stockton Heat. They are:
- RW Austin Carroll
- C Mitchell Heard
- D Aaron Johnson
- LW Ryan Lomberg
- RW Louick Marcotte
- G Kent Simpson
- RW Hunter Smith
There aren't any surprises among this group, as none were expected to actually make the Flames. Only two - Carroll and Smith - have contracts with the NHL club, but even then, they're still developing. Carroll, 21, and Smith, 20, have graduated from junior.
Johnson was on a professional tryout with the Flames, but he had already signed an AHL deal with the Heat, so he can be assigned. Also, if his name sounds familiar to you, you're probably remembering the time Johnson was traded for Steve Staios - the first time the Flames and Oilers committed blasphemy and directly traded with one another.
- G Nick Schneider
- D Douglas Murray
Schneider, who earned a contract over training camp, has been assigned to his WHL Medicine Hat Tigers. Murray, who did not play any games for the Flames, has simply been released from his professional tryout, and is unlikely to remain a part of the organization. (They already have their quota of defencemen named Dougie filled.)
Rasmus Andersson, whose Barrie Colts start their season tonight, is still with the Flames. He is the only skater still at camp who is guaranteed to go back to the CHL when (if?) cut.
