Flames 5, Predators 2 – Best Game of Season?

Published

on

The Flames were reeling a bit after suffering a pretty ugly loss to the Minnesota Wild. The attitude going into this game was something along the lines of “Oh boy.” Nashville is one of the toughest teams in the league and the only real redemption was the fact that Carter Hutton was in for Pekka Rinne.

On paper this seemed like a game where Calgary would need a late period comeback, another P.D.O. driven performance, or just a straight up miracle to win. There were no miracles. There was no late period comeback. The Flames simply dominated from start to finish.

The team finished the game with a 57 percent Corsi for percentage when score adjustments are made. They have had five games that were better this season. Of those, one came against the Maple Leafs, one came against the Devils, and two came against the Sabres. None of those teams are any good.

David Schlemko and Raphael Diaz once again led the team in possession, but this time plenty of others followed suit. The only two players in the negative were TJ Brodie and Deryk Engelland as Bob Hartley continues to oblige to the definition of insanity in trying the same thing over and over again and expecting different results. Mikael Backlund’s possession performance might be the most impressive as he had the worst zone starts on the team, yet still had positive possession.

Lance Bouma led the way in scoring, putting home two goals while Jiri Hudler led the team in points with three. He is now tied for ninth in points with 69 – just 10 off from league leader Sidney Crosby. Neither Filip Forsberg nor Johnny Gaudreau helped themselves in their quests for the Calder Trophy, though Gaudreau was even while Forsberg was minus-one and certainly there are some voters that look at that.

Nobody on the Predators had a particularly great game. The Mike Ribeiro line had positive possession relative to the team, but they were still negative in possession while they were the victims of two goals against. This came with easy zone starts as well. Anton Volchenkov was a team worst -11.7 in relative Corsi, but even without him on the ice they were still negative possession. Again, dominant game by the Flames.

Oh by the way, only four teams were listed earlier when the Flames had five games that were better than this. The one other game that was better? That came against the Nashville predators on Tuesday, October 15th. The Flames won in a shootout by a score of three to two and had a score adjusted Corsi for of 59 percent. The Flames might not be a fantastic possession team, but it would appear they have one team's number.
