Flames Harpoon Sharks 4 to 1 – Game #54 Stats

The Sharks were no match for the Flames as Calgary moves into second place in the Pacific.

on

The Calgary Flames faced off against the San Jose Sharks in the S.A.P. Center on Monday. The Flames have recently had the Sharks number and had gone 6-1 in their last seven games against their really far away Pacific division rivals. They were able to continue their hot streak against the Selachii, downing them by a final score of 4-1. Unlike many games where the Flames force fans to break out their antacids for the third period, no late period heroics were needed. They even managed to hit an empty net for the first time in what feels like forever when David Jones scored the icing on the cake late in the third.

The line of Lance Bouma, Mikael Backlund and David Jones started off rough. In fact, they were the worst possession forwards of the first period. That would change throughout the rest of the game as they went on to post the top Corsi numbers of the game with Bouma leading the way. Mark Giordano and TJ Brodie were their typical Brodano selves as they lead all defensemen in possession. That line and that pairing carried the way for the flames as nobody else finished with positive possession, though Josh Jooris did manage to post a positive relative Corsi.

Conversely, Curtis Glencross, Matt Stajan and David Wolf had a very rough time tonight winning the battles. Dennis Wideman was the biggest possession sieve of the game on defense and his partner Kris Russell was much better off without him. There was also a clear distinction with Raphael Diaz when he was partnered with Deryk Engelland versus when he was away from him.

The possession numbers carried translated to goals for the Bouma/Backlund/Jones line as they put up a combined total of four points. Score effects served Mason Raymond well as he also put one home for the Flames. Jiri Hudler scored on the power play and the Flames managed to kill off all three of their penalties which scored a rare victory in the special teams department for the team ranked 25th in the league. Johnny Gaudreau not only had an assist, but also drew two penalties for the Flames.

Giordano played a lot of minutes and with a lot of different people, but the most notable numbers are with the second line. The Corsi that line with Giordano on the ice was in the 70 percent range. Without Giordano on the ice, that number collapses to somewhere in the 30's. Bob Hartley had the Giordano and Brodie pairing out with the second line for a large portion of the game and it paid off in spades. Had they not been matched as they were, the results of this game could have been quite different.
