Flames trade Reto Berra to Avs, Stempniak to Penguins

The trade deadline is here!

Brad Rempel-USA TODAY Sports

According to reports, the Calgary Flames have traded goalie Reto Berra to the Colorado Avalanche for a draft pick, the details of which have yet to be announced a 2nd-rounder, according to the Flames.

The Berra transaction means Joni Ortio will stay up and Joey MacDonald is on his way to the Saddledome to dress as backup. Karri Ramo is still out with injury (but recovering well, it seems).

More importantly, uh ...

No choice but to re-sign him now. It's possible Burke tried to deal Cammalleri and couldn't get a return, considering the Islanders only got a 2nd and a prospect for Thomas Vanek. A moment of silence for Garth Snow, who probably won't have a job for much longer.

UPDATE: The Lee Stempniak to Pittsburgh rumours, previously dismissed, seem to be heating up again:

UPDATED UPDATE: Lee Stempniak has been dealt to the Pittsburgh Penguins for a third round pick, per Darren Dreger. The Pens will be Stemps' fifth NHL team after the Blues, Leafs, Coyotes and Flames. I have a feeling he's going to look pretty awesome on a good team, although it has to be a bit crappy to be traded immediately after your wife gives birth to twins. Best of luck to the Stempniak family.

It's a bit crazy that Reto Berra netted a higher return than Stempniak, though. I guess the Flames front office managed to sell him really well.
