Calgary Flames Add To Collection Of Bottom D: Sign Derek Smith

According to the team website, the Calgary Flames have signed D Derek Smith to a one year two way contract valued at $700,000.

Smith is a 27 year old offensive defenseman who's only Youtube highlight consists of this goal in game four of the Calder Cup finals

Thankfully for us, there's more to the world than Youtube highlights.

Smith doesn't have the best pedigree, having been left undrafted out of the OPJHL, but he's surpassed expectations with 3 years of CCHA hockey for Lake Superior State and 4 in the Senators AHL team. With 54 points in 71 games last year, Smith is a lock to play on the PP wherever he ends up in the Flames organization, be it on the NHL team or the Heat.

The real question this signing raises is asked quite well by Kent at Flamesnation.ca

The signing is mostly an inconsequential one, of course, so my confusion isn’t anything beyond minor puzzlement. It’s just…where are they going to put all these defensemen?

My personal hope: they become a super defenseman amalgation, not unlike a Power Ranger robot.
