The first round of the Draft concluded last night with the Flames failing to land a pick in the top thirty. We saw some swapping of picks and a few prospects and roster players on the move--the most significant deals being the Canucks' acquisition of Keith Ballard and Victor Oreskovich in return for Steve Bernier, Michael Grabner, and Vancouver's first round pick (25th overall), and the Penguins' acquisition of Dan Hamhuis' rights from the Flyers for a third round selection in next year's draft. There are still plenty rumours floating around about potential deals for names like Savard, Spezza, Kaberle, and Nabokov, but nothing substantial has emerged as of yet. Perhaps the most surprising aspect of yesterday's preceedings was the fall of defencemen Cam Fowler and Brandon Gormley, who were slotted as top ten if not top five picks and were eventually taken at #12 and #13 respectively, by the Ducks and the Coyotes, with the pick they received in the Jokinen deal last March. As it stands, the Flames are currently in possession of picks #64, #73, #104, #108, #133, #163, and #193.

The second round has just begun, so stay tuned!
