A weekend sweep for Inferno at Winsport for opening games

Calgary carried over its exceptional offensive output from the night before, beating the Boston Blades 4-1 at Winsport's Joan Snyder Rink Sunday morning. Sarah Davis had a goal and an assist, and Brianne Jenner added to her points streak with another goal on the weekend.

A quick turnaround from Saturday night's matchup didn't slow down the Inferno's offense, which threw 42 shots at Genevieve Lacasse; however, as the game progressed, Boston's skaters seem to find their own legs, trading shots with the Inferno and trying to capitalize on a few defensive breakdowns. However, Kathy Desjardins held firm for Calgary in net, turning aside 23 of 24 shots.

At first, it seemed like things were going to be a full-on repeat of Saturday. Calgary took a 2-0 lead in the first off of a rebound goal by Jenner and a nice finish by Davis for her first of the season. Then, in the second, they doubled their lead in less than ten seconds on the strength of goals by Louise Warren and rookie Blayre Turnbull. A late goal by Tara Watchorn made it 4-1 heading into the final frame.

The Blades continued to pressure in the third period, and they had plenty of opportunities to with a slew of penalties on the Inferno. However, Desjardins said no on all of them, including a 5 on 3 opportunity early in the period with Jacquie Pierri and Kelsey Webster in the box. It wasn't an easy game for Webster, who left the ice fuming after earning a 10 minute misconduct later in the period for head contact. However, Calgary kept the game in hand for the sweep.

Next weekend, it'll be the same scene in a different barn — two, in fact — as the Inferno head to Boston for a rematch. Puck drop is set for 6 p.m. Mountain time (8 p.m. Eastern) Saturday at New England Sports Center in Marlborough, and 8:30 a.m. (10:30 Eastern) Sunday at Tsongas Arena in Lowell.
