Maloney has a track record of making good value acquisitions.

The Calgary Flames continue to add experienced hockey people to the organization. Today, they hired Don Maloney as a pro scout. Maloney spent the past 9 seasons as General Manager for the Arizona Coyotes before the organization replaced him with 26-year-old John Chayka.

Current Flames General Manager Brad Treliving worked under Don Maloney as an Assistant General Manager when he was with the Coyotes, so there is some familiarity there. Adding Maloney to an organization that already includes Brad Treliving and Brian Burke, makes for a total of 3 men in the organization who have been NHL General Managers at various points of their careers. While Brad Treliving has shown to be a very capable GM, adding additional experienced hockey people in the organization cannot hurt.

Maloney was able to rather successfully navigate the Coyotes through some very difficult financial periods, with the club often spending near the floor of the salary cap but having some seasons where they made the playoffs. Recently, the Coyotes have not had much success on the ice, but their prospect pool generated under Maloney’s tenure is highly regarded around the hockey world. The addition of Maloney to the organization is not a game-changer by any means, but adding another experienced hockey mind with a good track record of finding talent that flies under the radar is the sort of move an organization should jump on when given the opportunity. Maloney likely wants the opportunity for another shot at a General Manager position, but this opportunity keeps him current in the game. Ultimately, this looks like a move beneficial for all parties involved.
