Wednesday marked the opening game of the Kelly Cup Playoffs for the Adirondack Thunder and according to the Thunder website, it didn't take them long to light the lamp against the Manchester Monarchs.

ECHL Rookie of the Year runner-up and last week's ECHL Player of the Week Michael Kirkpatrick opened the scoring on a nice feed from Greg Wolfe just 43 seconds into the game. It was 1-0 for the good guys.

Then late in the 2nd period Wolfe got his second point of the game after taking a pass from Captain Peter MacArthur across the crease and one-timing it home for a 2-0 lead.

The Monarchs finally pulled within one early in the 3rd period when Mark Anthoine banged in a gift by the net after the puck was deflected by Thunder goaltender Ken Appleby to make it 2-1. Just 31 seconds later, the Monarchs tied the game 2-2 when Zac Larazza fired a shot from the high slot past a screened Appleby.

But the Thunder would get the game winner with just over a minute left in the game when Greg Wolfe scored his second of the game and third point of the night to give the Thunder their first playoff win in franchise history 3-2.
