Game Recap: Flames 1, Bruins 2 – Not Smelling Like Roses For The Flames At The Garden

Game Summary

The Flames got progressively better tonight at the TD Garden in Boston as they took on the Bruins in their second and final matchup this season. But, alas, it was the same result, a 2-1 loss for Calgary after a lot of effort to close out the game.

With Joni Ortio in net and Garnet Hathaway on the front line with Sean Monahan and Johnny Gaudreau, the Flames started out strong in the first few minutes. Hathaway made himself known with his first shift and didn’t let off the gas throughout 60 minutes. The newest member of the Flames defense, Jyrki Jokipakka, played a solid first game for the Calgary team. But the penalties added up in the first period for both teams, which would be detrimental for the Flames. The Bruins opened the scoring during a questionable penalty on Joe Colborne for interfering. The score was 1-0 Bruins after 20 minutes.

The second frame didn’t help the visitors out much again, but at least their play was better. The Flames started out on a powerplay which resulted in no goals, but their penalty kill at the end of the period was quite a spectacle. Hathaway took his first NHL penalty for tripping this period and Michael Frolik took a hooking penalty. Ortio made key saves during both PKs that kept the Flames trailing by only one goal to end the second period.

By the third period, the Flames were in it and their efforts were finally rewarded. But not before Mark Giordano showed a little frustration after a shove by Marchand. Deryk Engelland blocked a shot that sent him down the tunnel, but he returned a few minutes later. And then Jakub Nakladal showed the Flames exactly why they’ve kept him in the lineup with a slapshot that couldn’t be stopped and the game was tied at 1-1. The game would end after a too-many-men call on the Flames that sealed the fate of this game with another goal by Boston. The Bruins would win this in regulation with a score of 2-1.

Flame Of The Game

Jakub Nakladal. He's a solid defensive player who seems to adapt well with anyone. With just over 11 minutes of ice time and 2 shots on net, he earned his first NHL goal and I could almost hear all of Flames fandom cheering him on. He's consistent, he's effective, and he has one heck of a slapper.

The Flames have a day off tomorrow before they play in Buffalo against the Sabres and then on to Pittsburgh to take on the Penguins in a matinee game before heading home.
