NHLPA is filing an appeal to the 20 game suspension the league levied on the Flames defenceman this afternoon.

It’s breaking Dennis Wideman news all afternoon. Earlier today the league dropped the hammer on Wideman with a 20 game suspension that would keep #6 out until the middle of March. Wideman is getting the gate for his cross check on linesman Don Henderson last week in a game against the Nashville Predators.

As expected, the NHLPA will appeal the suspension. Here's their statement on the matter from NHLPA.com:

"We strongly disagree with the League’s decision to suspend Dennis Wideman. Dennis has played in 11 NHL seasons and almost 800 games without incident. The facts, including the medical evidence presented at the hearing, clearly demonstrate that Dennis had no intention to make contact with the linesman. An appeal has been filed on the player’s behalf."

Even with the appeal, Dennis Wideman will remain suspended during the appeal process. As always, keep checking in for updates on this situation and all things Calgary Flames.
