It’s finally here: the 2016 NHL Trade Deadline. For the Flames, they’ll be clearing out what they can and preparing for next season. We’ll keep this constantly updated until the official deadline of 1 PM MT (and maybe just a few minutes after). Join us in the conversation below!

IN OUT
Hunter Shinkaruk Jiri Hudler
2016 2nd round pick (Florida) Markus Granlund
2018 4th round pick (Florida) Kris Russell
Jyrki Jokipakka
Brett Pollock
2016 conditional 2nd round pick (Dallas)

Articles to read:

Here's some trade deadline specific work we put together this past month. Some of this info is no longer relevant, but there's still some possibility.

Who's interested in the Flames? (16/02)

Flames looking at goalies (21/02)

Pieces and Prices (25/02)

Speculation:

Kris Russell might be going to Dallas, but the Flames are going to have to out-battle the Canucks yet again.

Russell’s price was falling yesterday pretty hard. Pittsburgh acquired Justin Schultz instead, and the Bruins seem to have dropped out of consideration. We’ll see what happens on this front.

Intriguingly, two of the Flames' most NHL ready AHLers were absent from yesterday's game…

We think this front won't attract much attention:

Maybe it will! That’d be nice.

Updates:

6:00 AM: Hope you have your coffee brewing, TradeCentre begins now.

6:45 AM: Jermain Franklin is reporting that Brad Treliving is looking for a Curtis Glencross type trade for any potential Russell deal. He also says that Treliving has a “plan” for today, but with no real specific details. The GM will talk to the TradeCentre panel soon.

6:53 AM: Boston appears to be back in on Russell, per Dreger

7:01 AM: Brian Burke is here instead of Treliving! The tie is undone, and apparently interest in Russell is heating up. He mentioned the fact that the team could not reach a deal with the defender, so a move is probably going to happen. Burke also said that there is interest in other Flames UFAs (David Jones, Jonas Hiller, Jakub Nakladal, and Karri Ramo), but no specifics. Goaltending is an offseason task, not a trade deadline task. As usual, he kept things short, showing nothing but (joking) contempt for TSN.

7:28 AM: TSN is struggling for content, so they’re talking about Team Canada’s World Cup roster (but only the defence). TJ Brodie is there, so that’s nice. Craig Button is pumping his tires, saying he is individually better than Mark Giordano.

7:30 AM: For your interest, TSN’s Trade Bait list ranks Kris Russell at #5, David Jones at #15, Josh Jooris at #22, and Jonas Hiller at #27.

7:32 AM: Our first deal of the day! The Penguins send Sergei Plotnikov to the Coyotes for (what is believed to be) a conditional pick and a yet to be named prospect.

7:45 AM:

Kris Russell is a defenceman.

8:10 AM: TSN's Matthew Scianetti is in Philadelphia, saying Russell will likely skate with the team this morning. We're also struggling for content right now.

8:28 AM: Sick of goaltending talk? Then don’t tune into TSN right now. Noodles is saying that Frederik Andersen (RFA) is the guy the Flames should go for in the offseason. Also mentions Jimmy Howard and Cam Ward. Eh.

8:40 AM: Want a potential view of the future, Flames fans?

TSN did a mock draft, with the Flames picking Pierre-Luc Dubois at #5 overall. Craig Button was pretty big on him, and so am I, but Craig Button was also big on Mark Jankowski.

9:16 AM: Another Kris Russell update: Dallas and Boston are still in on him, but no movement yet. The Stars reportedly have him ranked above Dan Hamhuis, which is a little bit more information than reports from yesterday, but still nothing certain.

9:21 AM: The panel has switched back to Calgary. Jermaine Franklin has another Russell “update”, which is pretty much nothing new. The dreaded Mike Cammalleri comparison was made. David Jones and Joe Colborne were also mentioned as trade bait, and picks are the trade targets. Again, nothing much new.

9:24 AM: Kerby Rychel has left the Blue Jackets‘ skate, which is not optional. He was mentioned as a possible Flames trade target earlier in the season, but not recently. Interesting developments abound.

9:27 AM: The TSN panel has been talkin' Flames for the past few minutes. It's nothing important and in fact quite depressing.

9:32 AM: Russell watch update! He's on the ice for morning skate.

9:36 AM: Hiller watch is also (presumably) over. He's expected to start tonight in Philadelphia.

9:47 AM:

TJ Brodie makes a million dollars less, FYI.

9:59 AM:

10:00 AM: The waiver wire has passed. The Flames claimed no one, but the Oilers nabbed two Adams (Cracknell and Pardy). They’ve got the Adam Advantage ™, so we’d better start watching out. Trades usually pick up after waiver wire, so we’ll (hopefully) have more for you now.

10:26 AM: Russell was interviewed after morning skate. Quite emotionally, he talked about the stresses of trade deadline, knowing that he was likely to be moved, the uncertainty, the difficulty, and trying to remaining positive. I'm not his biggest fan, but it still sucks to see that.

10:35 AM: Headed on over to Sportsnet to see another Brian Burke interview. Nothing much else to report from the early 6AM interview: goaltending is an offseason priority, Kris Russell's dad is a bullfighter, he's a good Western Canadian boy, didn't agree on a contract, yadda yadda yadda. I think he's reading a script.

10:39 AM: Late update to that previous entry: Burke has pretty much confirmed that, due to the interest and offers received for Russell, he will be dealt today. He may be trying to start a bidding war, which is good.

10:45 AM: Also, Dennis Wideman was not going to be traded according to Brian Burke. Good to know.

11:11 AM: Oh hey, things are happening. Mikael Boedker is going to Colorado.

11:19 AM: The Flames get spiritually involved in Trade Deadline with Alex Tanguay heading back to Arizona for Boedker. Connor Beakley and Kyle Wood are also heading to the desert.

11:22 AM: The Dallas Stars may being going after Dan Hamhuis and Kris Russell. Just give us the good prospects.

11:34 AM:

Uh oh

11:38 AM:

and confirmed.

12:00 PM: The official trade article is up, so go check it out if you haven't.

1:04 PM: We've been basking in the glory of that trade for a while, so long that trade deadline has passed. But wait just a sec…

My eyebrows raised above my forehead.
