Flames vs. Islanders Stats Recap
The Flames took on the Islanders in Nassau Veteran’s Memorial Coliseum last night. The Islanders squeaked out with a win by a score of two to one. Was it as close as it looked? Simply put, no. Karri Ramo played like a man possessed and was the primary reason for the score being as close as it was. That performance was quite flat by the Flames and quite dominant for the Islanders.
It’s rare that the first star goalie was outperformed by the third star goalie, but that was definitely the case in tonight’s game. Jaroslav Halak did play quite phenomenally allowing a goal in 27 shots, but Ramo allowed one goal in 38. Including the empty netter, the Islanders amassed 39 shots on goal for the game which isn’t exactly a good look. Here’s how the game shook out.

The Islanders destroyed the Flames in the possession battles. The first period wasn't necessarily the worst for the Flames as they put up better numbers than they usually do, but it got much worse from there as they couldn't even go seven for twenty in attempts during the third period.
Joe Colborne was the only Flame in positive possession which is odd. TJ Brodie put up his normal great possession numbers, but he couldn’t break fifty percent. Raphael Diaz was very good while Deryk Engelland was extremely bad and one has to wonder why Engelland was playing with Brodie at all. It certainly counters the claim of the Islanders announcers that Hartley has done a magnificent job with the team.

For the Islanders, Clutterbuck probably had a better game than Ryan Strome did. Strome was the worst possession player on the ice and Clutterbuck scored the game winning goal in the end. Clutterbuck also had harder zone starts and killed penalties in a game where the Flames weren’t able to score on their power plays. The Islanders drew three power play opportunities and all of them came from Brock Nelson’s efforts.
For the Flames, Josh Jooris had himself a nice little game. He managed to score, lead the team in shot attempts, won most of his faceoffs and had positive possession. Conversely, Engelland played a total of eleven minutes as a defenseman forcing everybody else to pick up the slack, took a penalty, had the worst possession numbers of anybody on the team while playing with the best defenseman and was minus one. And Islanders fans complain about Brian Strait…

For the Islanders, Jack Capuano has to be commended for trying Thomas Hickey and Travis Hamonic again particularly in a game against a team that was missing their best player and where the Islanders had a good shot at winning. The tandem had worked well in prior seasons, but was a tire fire on ice earlier this year. In this game it worked quite well and the Calvin de Haan and Lubomir Visnovsky pairing was fantastic.
For the Flames, if you take a look at Engelland you might notice something interesting. Paired with Brodie they had five shots for with nine against. That puts him at zero for and eight against with non-Brodie defensemen. You can see how important Brodie’s effect on the team is. It would be great if they could expand upon their defensive depth and get somebody that’s at least partially as capable as the Mark Giordano and Brodie pairing.
