Calgary Flames
Olympics Update: February 10
The latest dispatch from the Olympic Winter Games in Sochi.
Team Canada picked up another pile of medals today and now lead in the medal standings with seven: three gold, three silver and a bronze.
First was Charles Hamelin capturing gold in the men's short-track speedskating 1500m event early this morning. He was followed by Alexandre Bilodeau and Mikael Kingsbury finishing 1-2 in the men's moguls event—Bilodeau is the first freestyle skier in history to defend an Olympic title. Marc-Antoine Gagnon narrowly missed the podium, finishing fourth; Canada took four of a possible six medals in moguls, with the sisters Justine and Chloe Dufour-Lapointe also finishing first and second in the women's event on the weekend.
In solidarity with the Flames‘ two Olympians, Reto Berra‘s native Switzerland currently has one gold medal in the men’s 30km Skiathlon, thanks to 27-year-old Dario Cologna.
The Czech Republic, home to Ladislav Smid and still-totally-snubbed Jiri Hudler, currently has three medals: a silver and a bronze in the biathlon (Ondraj Moravec, 12.5km pursuit; Jaroslav Soukoup, 10km sprint) and Martina Sablikova‘s silver medal in the women’s 3000m speedskating event.
The Matchsticks staff are divided here between Canadian and American allegiances, so we'll have to let everyone take care of those teams themselves as the Games continue, but we'll do our best to also bring you results from Switzerland and the Czech Republic for our two Olympic hockey competitors.
