In an AHL transaction, the Abbotsford Heat have loaned Mark Cundari to the Chicago Wolves in exchange for centre Corey Locke. Calgary still owns Cundari’s NHL rights.

Locke has scored six goals and 25 points in 36 games for the Wolves this season, tied for the team lead with Mark Mancari. The Wolves are the affiliate of the St. Louis Blues, and are currently in third place in the Midwest Division. Locke is not signed to an NHL contract.

Cundari has four goals and 10 points in 32 games for the Heat. He is the Heat’s second highest scoring defenceman, behind only Chad Billins. The Heat are currently second in the West Division, three points back of the Texas Stars. You can read Hayley’s Abbotsford Heat Report here.

Cundari’s loan brings the Heat down to nine defencemen, including Billins, Derek Smith, and Chris Breen, who have dressed for the Flames this year; as well as prospects Tyler Wotherspoon, John Ramage, and Patrick Sieloff. The transaction looks to be a move both to give Cundari more playing time, as well as to bring additional scoring to the Heat.

The move likely doesn’t bode well for Cundari’s future with the Flames. The 5’9 defenceman was acquired from St. Louis alongside Reto Berra and a first round pick (Emile Poirier) for Jay Bouwmeester. Jay Feaster, who was fired on Dec. 12, was at the helm for the trade. The subpar return is likely one of the reasons he was let go.
