Flames Re-Sign Brian McGrattan Ahead of Free Agent Frenzy

Tom Szczerbowski

On the eve of NHL free agency, the Flames have announced the re-signing of pugilist Brian McGrattan to a two-year contract.

The Flames aren't waiting until tomorrow to get the players they want on their team next season under contract, as general manager Jay Feaster announced earlier this evening that the organization has re-signed tough guy Brian McGrattan to a two-year deal worth $1.5M.

The deal will see McGrattan make $750,000 in each of the two years. 31-year-old McGrattan had three goals and 49 PIMS in 21 games last season after being traded back to the Flames from the Nashville Predators in exchange for Abbotsford Heat defenceman Joe Piskula.

Defenceman Brett Carson and forward Steve Begin are the Flames' only remaining unrestricted free agents heading into tomorrow's free agent frenzy, and the nine RFAs that the Flames qualified are still all in need of new contracts.

Nathan Horton, Derek Roy, Jarome Iginla, Mikhail Grabovski, Tyler Bozak, Brenden Morrow and Jaromir Jagr are some of the biggest names available on the free agent market tomorrow, while Dustin Penner, Stephen Weiss, Valtteri Filppula, Nathan Gerbe, Tom Gilbert and Ray Emery are just some of the other names out there that might be of interest to the Flames and their extensive amount of cap space.
