Hobey Baker Winner to be Announced Tonight, Other NCAA News

Ahead of tonight’s game against the Phoenix Coyotes, a few of the Flames‘ NCAA hockey prospects are in the limelight.

The winner of the Hobey Baker Award (the MVP of college hockey) will be revealed shortly, and Flames’ prospect John Gaudreau is a finalist. Gaudreau had 21 goals and 51 points in 35 games this season before Boston College was eliminated early in the NCAA tournament.

Flames prospect Kenneth Agostino and his Yale Bulldogs team are off to the Frozen Four final tomorrow after beating the University of Massachusetts-Lowell 3-2 in overtime yesterday evening. The Bulldogs outshot the Lowell RiverHawks 47-18, but needed extra time to get the job done after the ‘Hawks overcame a 2-0 deficit with a record two goals in 14 seconds in the second period. Agostino had six shots on goal in the game and was originally thought to be in on Yale’s first goal of the night as he was stationed right in front of Lowell’s goaltender, but defeceman Mitch Witek was credited with the goal.

Captain Ben Hanowski and St. Cloud State weren’t so fortunate, however, as they would lose 4-1 to the Quinnipac Bobcats. Ben Hanowski was also held pointless in that contest, and Quinnipiac’s goaltender Eric Hartzell, who was also a Hobey Baker finalist, stopped 32 shots for the Bobcats.

It is being speculated on Twitter that the Flames have signed Ben Hanowski, who was in his senior year at St. Cloud State, to a contract today, but nothing has been confirmed by the team as of yet.
