I was sitting here reading the great moments you guys put up in great detail...and I started thinking to myself, I don't have one moment I can put my finger on that defines my memory of Jarome.
Maybe it's the numerous brain cells I've killed along the way, but the thing I remember more than anything is everything.
I remember Iggy being an absolute force. He was the guy who would bang it out in the corner, find an open area in the high slot and wire a one-timer top shelf past a helpless tender. The guy who, if the team found themselves being pushed around, would answer the bell and go with anyone on the other team...50 goal hands be-damned.
I remember Iggy being someone who was greater than the Calgary Flames allowed him to be. How the fuck we did not get this man a true center to play alongside, will eat at me forever. At each Olympics, he skated with the best players this nation had to offer and shone.
I remember the smile. You know the one. That almost childish grin that showed a true love of the sport. It seemed as if no matter how bad it got, he was still happy to be playing the game.
I remember the love. There was a time, before he got a little older and the franchise's prospects started to go downhill, that he was everything good about our hockey team. He was our Stevie Y, our Burnaby Joe, our motherfucking Jarome Iginla. I hope we can all remember how important that was to us.
But above all, I remember my favourite goddamn hockey player of all time. For all the reasons above, and so many more, I will always feel grateful and blessed by the hockey gods that this was a man we could call the Captain of the Calgary Flames for so many years.
