Disregard Everything: Jarome Iginla is a Pittsburgh Penguin

In an ultra-bizarre turn of events, just when it seemed like Jay Feaster and the Flames were about to confirm that Jarome Iginla had been traded to the Boston Bruins as everyone in the hockey universe already believed to be true, he instead told us all that Iggy was headed to Pittsburgh.

Ok, here is the deal, for real this time, as confirmed by both parties:

<blockquote class=”twitter-tweet”><p>BREAKING NEWS: <a href=”https://twitter.com/search/%23Pens”>#Pens</a> acquired Jarome Iginla from Calgary for Ben Hanowski, Kenny Agostino and 2013 first-round pick</p>&mdash; Pittsburgh Penguins (@penguins) <a href=”https://twitter.com/penguins/status/317146382458843136″>March 28, 2013</a></blockquote>

<blockquote class=”twitter-tweet”><p>The <a href=”https://twitter.com/search/%23Flames”>#Flames</a> acquire Kenneth Agostino &amp; Ben Hanowski &amp; the Pittsburgh Penguins 2013 first round pick for Iginla.</p>&mdash; Calgary Flames (@NHLFlames) <a href=”https://twitter.com/NHLFlames/status/317146575606517760″>March 28, 2013</a></blockquote>

The players coming back are two NCAA forwards (neither are centers, funnily enough). Agostino was selected by the Penguins in the fifth round of the 2010 NHL entry draft while Hanowski was selected in the third round in 2009. Corey Pronman describes both as above-average prospects, but says he believes the real value lies in the first-round pick the Flames acquired from the Penguins, which is NOT conditional:

<blockquote class=”twitter-tweet”><p>Agostino and Hanowski are both above-average prospects but not great ones, like Agostino more but need to check my notes.</p>&mdash; Corey Pronman (@coreypronman) <a href=”https://twitter.com/coreypronman/status/317147537821806593″>March 28, 2013</a></blockquote>

<blockquote class=”twitter-tweet”><p>The late first round pick in 2013 is pretty valuable. That’s probably where the value comes from in this deal, and Hanowski has upside.</p>&mdash; Corey Pronman (@coreypronman) <a href=”https://twitter.com/coreypronman/status/317150470365933568″>March 28, 2013</a></blockquote>

According to Pronman, Hanowski is in his last year at St. Cloud State, and could join the Flames following the NCAA post-season.

Holy hell.

I do think Iginla has a better chance of wining the Cup with the Pens than he did with the Bruins though, so that’s good. Also, CROSBY!!!! Having a (more) legitimate reason to cheer for Pittsburgh kind of rules.
