Flames Trade Jackman to Ducks, Recall Jones

After becoming the extra man on the Flames' roster, playing in just 10 games this season, Tim Jackman was traded to the Anaheim Ducks today for a sixth round pick.

Tim Jackman had become something of a fixture in the press box this season. The 32-year-old has appeared in less than half of his team’s games so far this season, playing on the fourth line less than 10 minutes per game in the games he did play.

Jackman had not suited up for the Flames since November 14th in his team’s 7-3 loss to the Dallas Stars. He played a season-low 2:11 back on October 16th. Many had noted the previously useful forward’s descent into something of a liability; he was slow and with just one point in 10 games, he did not drive offensive results.

Today, the Flames announced that they had traded the winger to the Anaheim Ducks for a sixth-round pick in next year’s NHL entry draft. The Flames could have exposed him to waivers en route to sending him down to Abbotsford, but although Jackman himself had limited value, would have risked losing him for nothing on waivers. This way they recoup some value, even if it is in the form of a sixth-round pick.

However a quick glance at the Ducks' Capgeek page reveals that the team has already reached the 50-contract maximum, unless I'm counting wrong, which means they will have to make another move before they can officially add Jackman to their roster.

The Flames have re-called Blair Jones in Jackman’s place. Jones leads the Heat in scoring so far this season with 20 points in 16 games with the club. The Heat currently lead the Western Conference with 31 points and have won 10 of their 11 games so far this month with four left to play.
