Lockout Officially Over, Flames to Begin Season Sunday at Home vs. San Jose

Mike Ridewood

After the NHLPA voted in favour of ratifying the new CBA earlier today, the two sides have signed the Memorandum of Understanding, officially agreeing to the new CBA and ending the lockout. Training camp will open for all teams on Sunday and, more importantly, the 48-game schedule has finally been released. The Flames will open the season at home against the San Jose Sharks on January 20th instead of on the road in Edmonton on January 19th as was originally believed.

While it's disappointing that the Flames won't face off against their provincial rivals on HNIC on opening night, it is nice to have this whole lockout/scheduling mess finalized at last.

On the Forecheck 's Dirk Hoag discusses the end of the lockout in studio:

The Flames will play the Anaheim Ducks at home on Monday, January 21st before playing three consecutive games against division rivals on January 23rd in Vancouver and on January 26th and 31st at home against Edmonton and Colorado, respectively.

The Flames will play the Canucks and Wild five times each, the Oilers and Avalanche four times, and the Sharks, Ducks, Kings, Blues, Blue Jackets, Predators, Red Wings, Stars, Coyotes, and Blackhawks three times each. Calgary will close out the season on Friday, April 26th on the road against the Chicago Blackhawks.

Here is the full schedule on the Flames' website. I believe Trade Deadline day will be April 3rd and Free Agency will begin on July 5th. The final possible day for the Stanley Cup to be awarded is June 28th.

The Flames will be free to make roster moves as of 12 a.m. ET, but news has already surfaced that the following group of Abbotsford Heat players have packed their bags and are en route to Calgary for training camp, beginning tomorrow: Roman Horak, TJ Brodie, Leland Irving, Paul Byron, Chris Breen, Ben Street, Steve McCarthy (PTO), and Sven Baertschi, who is already in Calgary. The Heat are in action right now and are currently down 1-0 at home against the Chicago Wolves at the beginning of the second period.

The Flames have also invited 31-year-old forward and former Oiler Brad Winchester to training camp on a PTO. Steve Begin (PTO) and Brett Carson round out the list of other camp invitees.
