A 9-0 Loss: That Which Is Simply Impossible To Ignore
Something I've been saying all season is that the Calgary Flames, despite the occasional moments of brilliance, if not competence, are not very good. Something the Calgary Flames management has been ignoring all season is that the Calgary Flames are not very good.
It's easy to delude yourself- listen to the people that call in to sports radio shows. Most of them believe what they wish to believe about their team and ignore the realities. Management is rarely so different. With a vested interest, sports management personnel wish to both believe and sell a rosier reality- and it's hard to blame them. That reality is their livelihood.
If Jay Feaster were to turn to Ken King and say, "My moves from this summer aren't working out, let's go in a different direction", King would probably look at him until Feaster walked himself out the door. Why should team CEO's, presidents, and even owners rely on a coach or general manager who wastes their money and then doesn't even have faith in their own moves?
In a perfect world, GMs would be able to look back at a move and say "This didn't work, this is why" and not lose their job for it. In a salary capped NHL where players cost both cap space and real dollars, that's hardly possible. There is little room for errors of the magnitude of Ales Kotalik.
However, the Calgary Flames have finally hit a point where they can no longer sell this team as quality. They can no longer merely point to Jarome Iginla and say "Look! We have a star! Iggy Iggy Iggy!" Why? Because the team not only embarrassed itself- it embarrassed the fans. A team can be pretty bad before it starts upsetting even the most casual of fans- look at the Edmonton Oilers. The problem is not consistently being pretty bad, it's occasionally being embarrassingly bad. It's losing 9-0, a contest so bad that PR can't even sell it as a gong show.
That embarrassment is not something you can sell. TSN, CBC, hell, even ESPN in the States will look at that score and point and laugh. Calgary fans will find themselves less willing to shell out cash for gear, because why wear gear that gets you mocked? Calgary fans will find themselves less willing to talk about the team online, because why support a team that gets you relentlessly trolled?
So management is in a position where the team was so noticeably bad that a change has to come. This may be in the form of a trade (the immediate result of the 9 game losing streak, if you'll recall, was the Dion Phaneuf trade), the form of a firing (it took a while, but even Darryl Sutter eventually bit the bullet), or even a pretension of honesty (the rarest result of all with this organization). What response the organization will have is a mystery at this point, but given the poor play over the entire roadtrip, it should be big. This game in and of itself won't be and shouldn't be the reason the Flames tear it down and fire personnel; this game should be and will be looked upon as the catalyst for that tear down though.

The Flames haven’t been "good" for several years. Most have been saying that for at least a couple of years. On top of this I don’t think anyone can deny that D Sutter seriously damaged the team back in his final two years.
In my mind I see it as comparable to what Risebrough did in the 90s. It is going to take time to turn it around. Serious time. If you are an impatient fan you may want to jump ship for another team.
On the fan base it is a different animal. It wasn’t until I left Calgary that I realized just how rich of a city it is. Calgary has grown tremendously since the 90s and is awash in money in the population.

Canada is already largely immune to the effects of the recession and Calgary is at the head of an already strong economy. When the median family income is 91,570.00 that means a whole ton of households are making well over 100 Large.
Hockey tickets will still be a commodity to buy even on a last place team.
If Edmonton can continue to sell-out with a dead last team and 6 straight years missing the playoffs I wouldn’t worry too much about Calgary. The world may be in Great Recession but Calgarians are rolling in money with their Oil industry base.
Consider contributing to Wiki if you can. It is has come a long way since its inception in quality and its founders have resisted attempts to commercialize it. Lets keep it alive with a few dollars each.
It was a real shock to the system when I came to Texas, I bought twice the house for half the price I would have paid in Calgary. Actually the ratio was probably more like 3 times the house for the 1 / 3 the price.
Imagine paying 450,000 for this 680 sq ft house in Calgary built in 1930. LOL I think Calgarians will buy Flames tickets for quite some time. I used to show these kind of links to people here in Texas on my iPhone but I stopped because it shocked them so much.

To be completely fair about that 680sq ft house, I’m pretty sure the best reason to buy that is to tear it down. That being said, it’s still crazy expensive. I bought my townhouse for MUCH less than that and it’s easily double the sq ft, built in 1999, and just as close to downtown.
As for the game….uh…go Hitmen?
For sure a tear down but goes to the value of the land. Have a look what you can buy in Central Austin for 495K and I assure you, you can get it for 450K – 3000 sq feet.

Also out of curiosity when did you buy your town house? Even just 5 years ago I am sure you got a deal. The housing bubble burst in the States but it really didn’t in Calgary as far as I know, everything more or less held value with steady appreciation.

Or, you could come to Detroit and try to vicariously feel good about the Red Wings. http://www.trulia.com/property/3056776814-1771-Seminole-St-Detroit-MI-48214
