where are you going then?

by d_p_h on Jan 24, 2012 6:18 PM PST up reply actions

I tutor English Mon/Tues/Wed nights.

by SarahM on Jan 24, 2012 6:19 PM PST up reply actions

good for you.

Them’s foreigners need some learning from a native english speaker on how to talk good.

Ha! Except that, with very few exceptions, my students are very upper-middle class, mostly first-generation Canadian overachievers who want to make the leap from A to A+. But yes :)

by SarahM on Jan 24, 2012 6:24 PM PST up reply actions

yeah, I wasn’t being serious… I know the demographic of who usually gets tutoring (did some in Math) and the reality is that the people who were getting tutoring probably should have been tutoring other people in their classes – woulda been more value to our society.

by d_p_h on Jan 24, 2012 6:28 PM PST up reply actions

My agency does some subsidized tutoring for people who really need it. But yeah, it’s not cheap, and so it tends to be pretty high-level stuff for very wealthy families. Though I do have a couple of kids who are definitely struggling ES/AL students.

by SarahM on Jan 24, 2012 6:31 PM PST up reply actions

I was never that organized, just picked up some work from someone who knew some kids who needed/wanted an edge up.

It always has made me sad understanding that kids who come from families where the parents think that it’s the schools job to teach em everything probably also have a genetic pre-disposition to struggle academically a little and they won’t / can’t get a little leg up.. kind of a piling on but I don’t know what a good solution to it is.

by d_p_h on Jan 24, 2012 6:34 PM PST up reply actions

And I should add, I resisted taking students on Tuesdays for a long time, because it’s always a hockey night. But let’s be honest, I love money more than I love the Flames ;)

Especially these flames and money given prices in Lotusland

There’s a reason I want to move away from Vancouver. It’s absurd how expensive it is to live in this city.

by SarahM on Jan 24, 2012 6:25 PM PST up reply actions

only (or particularly) if you ever want to own your own place to live and not have a roommate

by d_p_h on Jan 24, 2012 6:29 PM PST up reply actions

Report yesterday said that Vancouver is the second most expensive place to buy a home in the world. And I am way too old to have a roommate.

by SarahM on Jan 24, 2012 6:33 PM PST up reply actions

depends on the roommate — legally sanctified with fringe benefits (not just cutting the accomodation bill) can be fun.

by d_p_h on Jan 24, 2012 6:36 PM PST up reply actions

Ha! Yes, well that’s definitely the exception.

by SarahM on Jan 24, 2012 6:38 PM PST up reply actions

how the hell did that not go in?

by d_p_h on Jan 24, 2012 6:38 PM PST reply actions

hellla save by kipper

by d_p_h on Jan 24, 2012 6:38 PM PST up reply actions

Oh, are you watching this game? I just sort of have it on in the background. I am a terrible fan.

by SarahM on Jan 24, 2012 6:39 PM PST up reply actions

no, not with this team, the fact that you have it on at all makes you better than many. (plus you aren’t a dolt with your comments — that makes you top-o-the-heap in my mind)

by d_p_h on Jan 24, 2012 6:41 PM PST up reply actions

Awww. I am off, though. Here’s hoping they can somehow eke out a win to go into the break :)

I like the gt picture tonight. One of those rare moments.

no idea
Mike is probably restocking the beer machine

by d_p_h on Jan 24, 2012 6:58 PM PST up reply actions

I envision Mike removing beer from boxes but drinking them before he is able to stock the machine.

by Colin S on Jan 24, 2012 7:01 PM PST up reply actions

For some reason, this seems pretty likely and accurate.

Kind of like how I cook bacon.

by d_p_h on Jan 24, 2012 7:08 PM PST up reply actions

Sorry guys, I was at the Walrus Talks event getting myself cultured. And the beer machine remains fairly well stocked, although I may need to grab a sixer before next week’s game just to make sure I have the range covered.

Justin’s really sick. Horrible flu of some sort, by the sounds of it.

Stopping in quick before my game tonight. Championship game!

Looking good on this front so far.

Jackman is awesome along the boards.

Vlasic is quickly becoming one of those flames killers in my mind… a shudder a little when I hear his name..

Good pickles though.

I can just imagine Kipper’s “oh shit” as that deflects off Butler’s skate and heads for the top corner…

I feel so lonely.

Backlund fell in the corner…

Dammit. It was still scoreless when I got in the car to come home, and then 1-0 with 30 seconds left when I got home. Stupid hockey.

by SarahM on Jan 24, 2012 8:24 PM PST reply actions

Tough loss – that is the frustrating part of the Sutter D system, one breakdown and the game is lost. Oh well, whatever.

I prefer a 3 or 4 goal loss to this. So frustrating to take a game like this half-way through the third and not get a single point.

Basically bad luck with Gio and Backlund falling and losing their man. If one of them had fell fine but they both fell on the same play, frustrating…

The NHL is such a joke sometime

That Ferriero goal, the puck was rebounding outside the range of his stick, he reaches up, catches it, carries it from behind his shoulder to right where his stick is, puts it down, and shoots it in.

That’s closing your hand on the puck, carrying it to where you want it. Why not just base your offense around that, if that’s allowed? You could just stand on one side of the goal, have your teammates chip the puck to your hand, you catch it, put it down, and score.

Ridiculous. Winning the game with your hand, in hockey. Absolutely ridiculous. But this has been mounting now for awhile now. Refs keep getting more lax making that call, players have figured out as long as they only close their hand on it for a second and move it quickly, they can carry it and put it wherever they want without getting a penalty. And it culminated tonight in ruining a hard fought hockey game, making a farce of the whole thing.
