Flames Buying Lacrosse Team

Hi Flames fans,

I just wanted to spread the news that the Calgary Flames are buying your local lacrosse team. The Calgary Roughnecks had the best record in the National Lacrosse League this season before falling to the Washington Stealth in the Western Conference Championship.

The Roughnecks and NLL are a hidden gem all around the USA and Canada. The Necks play at the same stadium as the Flames, the Saddledome, and have a bright future. They had this season's rookie of the year in Curtis Dickson and the league's best coach in Dave Pym.

I run the SBNation lacrosse site so if you have any questions about the game, feel free to ask. But I wanted to inform you that this sale will help the Flames a lot as the Roughnecks are a profitable team.

Awesome! I love the Roughnecks, would have sucked if they had to fold or leave.

Yes it would have

this stabilises the league a bit. The other NHL owned teams (Colorado and Buffalo) are very successful.

I thought the Roughnecks were losing money and almost went bankrupt?

I seem to recall them having trouble paying their players.

Could be mistaken though.

They were

because the Roughnecks did not get a profit, the stadium did, owned by the Flames. Only ticket sales went to the Necks. Now that the Flames own them, there will be more sales because they have money to promote and get the consessions.

I would criticize the owners and say this is basically flushing a couple million down the toilet, but then really… ALES KOTALIK??? It seems very few of these decisions are made based on pure economics.

At the end of the day I suspect this has little to do with the health of the NLL. The Flames org is about embark on a serious discussion with the government over funding a new facility, and an extra 15-18 days occupancy will certainly help their argument. We’ll see what happens after the politics work themselves out.

I know you’re a huge fan Marisa, but unfortunately I think you’re making a statement of faith rather than fact. The Flames have definitely had the opportunity to buy this team since January (when they went on sale in the press), and likely there was at least a tacit offer going back to the last labour action (2008 I think?). Considering they just now pulled the trigger, it seems unlikely that there’s a big financial windfall apparent in the deal.

Even beyond that, I don’t think the problem was promotion. I’m not a lacrosse fan at all, and I get their ticket promotions from the Fan960 newsletter all the time (typical offer would be 25% off face). Awareness and coverage of the Roughnecks are actually not that bad around here. I attended the season opener and the semi-final vs. Colorado, and the crowds were middling at best. Based on lots of trips to the ‘dome, the posted attendance was optimistic at best. Of course, I probably wouldn’t have gone if I’d had to pay for the tickets (and I go to tons of sports and other events around town).

Now, in this particular situation I think our goals are aligned: If we get an awesome new stadium and you get to keep lacrosse in Calgary for a couple more years (with the opportunity to grow the revenues), then its obviously a win-win.

I am basing this off of facts.

Buffalo and Colorado are owned by NHL teams and they sell more than their NHL teams. Calgary has one of the leagues best attendance already, So shouldn’t they now sell tickets even more?
Lacrosse is a great sport. Everyone I have introduced to the NLL has loved it. I know for a fact they do not promote enough and I know why as well. Money. Now they have it and they can promote
