Oilers Get 450M Arena Deal
Edmonton Oilers owner Daryl Katz had a $450M Arena Deal approved late last night by Edmonton City Council. The deal is contingent on public funding from the Province of Alberta and/or the Federal Government.
It provides 35 years of security for Oiler hockey fans in Edmonton, that the team will not be moved. It also sets an expectation, if approved, that the Calgary Flames would be entitled to a similar deal in Provincial funding, if the Saddledome is to be upgraded or replaced.
If Federal Government funding is also approved it would follow that the other 4 and perhaps 5 NHL teams, (if Winnipeg confirms the arrival of the Thrashers) would also get approval for a similar Arena funding injection.
Will the Vancouver Canucks, the Winnipeg 'Thrashers', the Montreal Canadiens, the Toronto Maple Leafs, the Ottawa Senators and perhaps even the NHL-less Quebec City also get Federal Funding to either build a new Arena or upgrade an existing one?

I don’t pay municipal taxes, but I still think it’s moronic that taxpayers might have to foot the bill for a place to play games.

If Edmonton gets $100 million from the province/feds to build their temple to overpaid children, that’s going to be a dangerous precedent. I like hockey as much as the next guy, and the city may get some direct tourism/marketing/general economic benefit that is worth more than zero (they are the “Calgary” Flames after all), but these are some seriously rich people we could be propping up with provincial/federal cash.
All I know is, whatever they get, we’d better see our share of the bounty.
+1 we were basically writing the same thing at the same time. Don’t know all the ins and outs of that Arena saga in Edmonton but if Provincial money is in the mix – Calgary better see the same amount.

Personally, I love the Dome, I think it is one of the iconic landmarks in Calgary, people new to Calgary always comment on it. So I hope the Flames play there for as long as possible.
I would never support Flames owners asking for money from the Govt but my view is that if Edmonton gets money, Calgary should get the same. It is just the point of fairness.
It is the whole reason why the Feds probably want to stay away from it because once you do it for one city, the expectation will be rooted to do it for all the rest.
Alberta has also said they will not fund pro sports teams, I believe. However, given that Katz’s proposal includes all the urban landscaping and development along with the arena, he may be able to get around it.
Chances are though, this is just a tentative private-public partnership agreement from the city. The next fight is to get the province and feds on line. That will be no easy task if the agreements aren’t already in place. Cities are always the first to approve a deal like this, but the last to get their money in. Unless the feds/province pony up the cash first, Edmonton won’t be left holding the bag.
