Game 34 Recap: Woo Woo

Ten Thoughts

-Miikka Kiprusoff had an outstanding game-I do believe this is where I drop the "Vintage Kipper" label-probably one of, if not the, best performance(s) of the season for him. 30 shots and 29 stops on the night.

-Mikael Backlund had an excellent game tonight. His possesion stats might not look outlandish, with a +1 in EV scoring chances and a +3 in Corsi, but I was really impressed with the 17:29 he was on the ice. Oh, and that final face-off win was pretty awesome too.

-The fans that are at the 'Dome don't really add to the game anymore. I think the glory days of the C of Red have gone by the wayside. You could legitimately make an argument two ways here as to why, but either way the end result is a stoic mass of people.

Star-divide

-Everything that happened on Curtis Glencross' goal was outstanding. The cycling, the set-up pass, the aversion of the defence...and of course, the top ched on the backhand.

-Paul Byron's first game back was a big "meh". I guess we'll see how he progresses in the next few games as Matt Stajan's on IR. Jay Bouwmeester, Chris Butler and few other guys had pretty good games tonight.

-Tim Jackman was left a bloody mess after a fight tonight. After reading the Derek Boogaard pieces in the New York Times, I'm just about done with fighting, period.

-The first line of the Flames had the best game of their season tonight. They, along with Jay Bouwmeester and Chris Butler, started exactly zero times in the offensive zone yet they still put up 13 more scoring chances at EV then their opponents. They also were a combined +22 in Corsi before the score effects started to take hold in the third period (they finished at +10 in Corsi).

-Another great special teams performance tonight. A lot of virtual ink has been spilled about the resurgent PP, but the aggressive PK has really helped keep the team in it. Olli Jokinen's two penalties late were irrelevant thanks to the PK unit.

-An anonymous tipster sent me an email stating that apparently there are some media members who are angry at me because "I'm asking questions". This confuses me-I'm fully credentialed by the Flames and I'm looking to add to any commentary I produce. There's a reason I wait until the end to ask questions-I don't want to step on any toes. Do they expect me to just sit there? The thing I find funny is that when I'm sitting in the Media Lounge, people are always speaking their mind and bitching about things-much like we do on the internet-but they never ask questions about it. It's really gutless, to be honest. Talking about me behind my back and not having the balls to tough ask questions really shows how sad the state of some (and I emphasize this because there are at least a few guys who have been awesome with me) of the media in this city is.

-The Flames were full value for the win tonight-after the first. Their domination in the second period basically won them the game. Those first 10 minutes the Flames out-shot the Wild 10-0 and racked up a +9 Corsi rating. The score effects I talked about above took hold a wee bit in the third, leading to the team finishing +4 in EV scoring chances and +4 in Corsi. A good game overall but those types of swings won't get you wins against elite teams.

Three Stars

1. Jarome Iginla-A goal and an assist led the team.
2. Miikka Kiprusoff-29 saves tonight.
3. Mikael Backlund-17+ minutes in all three situations and a couple key faceoffs.

Lastly...

The Good Guys snap a losing streak with a great performance from the top line. The Flames' next game is Thursday against the Red Wings.

Justin, on your anonymous tipster.

I went through the same thing to a degree in my first career position after University. Going into the first meeting with suggestions and questions, it intimidates older staff to a degree.

I’m not suggesting you do one thing or another, that is up to you but yeah I suspect the expectation is that you sit quietly and observe for awhile and "pay your dues" so to speak, before asking questions. Talking with other media people, asking them questions and asking for their input before questioning Sutter.

Old people usually like to be asked for advice rather than seeing someone come in ready to roll. Kind of a respect thing that holds for any new job, you keep a low profile and chat up your co-workers by asking questions to cultivate good will and your own niche.

In your case they are not really co-workers but co-media folks. Who knows they may have some very good inside tips for you.

It is up to you. Again I thought your question in the pre-game was the most interesting one but it also likely showed up your co-media interviewers at the same time.

Patience is my advice. You can do both in time

Justin will probably ask better questions but there is a price to pay for it. It isn’t quite the same thing as a career situation because they are technically competitors not co-workers and they get paid and Justin doesn’t, he should have his eyes open about it.

If Justin decides to ask the tough questions and carve out his niche right away he shouldn’t be put off by blow-back from established journalists who have been there for awhile.

Instead of calling journalists gutless for sitting privately in the lounge and bitching about X issue – Justin may want to ask them why they don’t ask questions about it? Is it gutless or is there some other reason?

If Justin crosses the line and loses his credentials he doesn’t care, he just rants for a few months about it here and continues on in his life. Others there it is their life, they probably walk a different line.

So you think that they’re probably scared of losing access and thus value to their employer? I’m not sure that so long as your questions are tough but not overly antagonistics it’s something they should worry about.

Truthfully I think that if you’re to afried to ask the tough questions, and thus don’t, then you’re not a real journalist… you’re just a cog in the propaganda machine.

Fair point, I was trying to apply an office politics analysis to the situation. Perhaps it doesn’t fit. I’ve seen many times how the best worker / performer doesn’t necessarily get the advantage over the suave gabber at the water cooler.

Bloggers vs MSM – Kent probably gave the best advice, work hard and do your job and don’t be put off by the negative nancies.

the gutless was more referring to the talking about me behind my back. these guys are supposed to be professionals. if they have a problem with what I’m doing, they should explicitly state that.

by Justin Azevedo on Dec 21, 2011 9:08 AM PST up reply actions

and they should state it directly to me, instead of some guy I handed a business card to in the past couple of months or whatever.

Will say however, that insulting them on this blog isn’t going to help your case. Just write solid articles and keep asking intelligent question and you’ll be alright.

Fair, but I wouldve said something similar right to the person’s face.

For sure, I just think it may give the dude a little more fuel for his anti-blogger fire.
Oh, and by the way…you’re killing these recaps. Well done!

MSM Sports Journalists (particularily local MSM) are largely just awful, mostly just regurgitation of ol’ familier memes repeated adnaseum in what get’s into the press. No insight, no tough questions, no follow-up… just a lot of sycophatic towing of the company line.

by Parallex on Dec 21, 2011 8:38 AM PST up reply actions

You likely have to deal with the stigma of being a “blogger” Justin, which puts you an on even lower rung of the implicit hierarchy. Just keeping going and doing good work and you’ll be fine Im sure.

i also have to wonder if age doesn’t factor into it. it shouldn’t. but probably does.
i think doogie howser went thru the same thing.

Justin,

This is only a suggestion… but maybe to dispel the “blogger” stigma, you could put on some pants. Please.

Yours,

Keep on keepin' on

If the MSM guys aren’t happy about having you in there asking questions, that’s their problem, not at all yours. As long as you act professionally, and give them the benefit of first dibs (which is just the decent thing to do for the on-deadline guys in particular), they have no right to complain.

They want you to take offense to it and back down. But, please don’t. IMO if you just go in there and ask the same old questions then what does it add? You’re just another guy getting the same info night in night out. I appreciate the perspective of a new face and encourage it at all times. Hell, maybe it’ll kick a couple of the ol’ faithful in the ass and get them on board too. But, who cares if it doesn’t? As long as you’re doing your job properly and not stepping in toes, like you said, then I think you’re doing your job. Good work as usual and I look forward to your next game.
