Am I A Blogger In the Basement In my Underwear?

There are very few times in which I'm actually angry with the management of the Calgary Flames. I'm frequently disappointed, yes, but rarely angry. This is one of those times. In a press conference today, GM Jay Feaster took the low road and called bloggers discussing the Jarome Iginla rumors basement dwellers who exist only in underwear. Now, this rhetoric is nothing new from either MSM or front office personnel around the league, but what particularly irritates me in this case is the fact that bloggers had absolutely nothing to do with the Jarome Iginla rumors. Nothing.

In fact, if you look at my article on the issue, I asked for and received and official statement from the team which I quoted and went on to say that even going forward I don't believe an Iginla trade will ever happen. The origin of all this was two members of the mainstream media- Eric Francis and Bruce Garrioch. SBN Blog Defending Big D takes down the Bruce Garrioch rumor pretty well, and I addressed the Eric Francis rumor here. So what's my point? Us "bloggers" get mocked for making up rumors we don't make up and hacks like Francis and Garrioch get credentials. So, Jay Feaster, let me tell you about my "basement dwelling" antics.

Star-divide

I get up at 0530 most days. Why do I write it like that? Because I'm a uniformed member of the United States Coast Guard. I work on average 50 hours a week, not counting the days where I stand a 24 radio watch and can't leave a secure room. That's just at my current unit- when I leave this unit I'll likely be on a seagoing vessel (a cutter) where I work constantly for months at a time. Boy that sure is a lot of time in the basement. The underwear I happen to spend my time wearing is dark blue, and it bears the letters U.S. Coast Guard on the left breast pocket.

Surely we have one writer on staff who's a basement dweller, right? Perhaps it's one of the two college students- either the one who studies journalism thousands of miles away from her family or the one who's a political science major holding down several jobs and writing for both this site and the school newspaper? Or maybe it's the writers with families and full time careers? I hear working 50 hour weeks makes it quite easy to spend a lot of time in your basement wearing nothing but saggy tighty whities and drinking Red Bull.

What about other Flames blogs? Of the major and quality blogs that exist (Flamesnation, Hit the Post, the growing Book of Loob), none of them gave this rumor any credence or spent time discussing it in any capacity other than dismissing it.

The fact is, Mr. Feaster, you not only insult me, but you insult an entire website which has worked hard to shed the image of rumor mongering bloggers. We write responsibly and ethically. We may get heated at times, but a failing team will do that to a fan. So if you want to insult someone, make sure it's the right someone. I'd really appreciate that on both my behalf and on behalf of my staff.

Thanks Connie, it’s pretty rare I actually get mad.

Your underwear has pockets? That IS impressive!

Great post. I have to say as an Oilers blogger that my opinion of Jay Feaster dropped a couple (more) notches yesterday. Just a bush league, douche league comment. A random cheap shot. Thanks for calling him out.

funny story: I am currently working 30 hours a week while going to school full time to eventually attain the same type of degree mr. feaster currently holds.

yes, I do spend a fair amount of time in the basement in my underwear. this time is called “sleep”.

We can all thank the immortal Eklund for the never dissipating stigma that sticks to bloggers due to his rumor mongering. That doesn’t excuse those in the MSM and front offices that casually toss it out as if it were accurate, of course.

by Kent Wilson on Dec 2, 2011 4:49 PM PST reply actions

I think this is spot on.

Eklund has done incredible damage and I think this is who Feaster was targeting. I wish there was some way to push him out of the general umbrella of “blogger.” Bleacher Report as a content fluff mill is another one.

M&G held off for quite awhile but as Feaster says at some point you have to comment on the rumors because once the mainstream media picks it up – a la Calgary Sun. You almost feel obligated to.

Brilliant stuff Arik

What can you do about Ek and BR? By appealing to the lowest common denominator, he has one of the more successful sites, from making things up.

I am going to Tweet this bad boy, and for a Canuck fan, that is about as rare as I hear you get mad.

The thing that makes me a little mad is the pile on, like a couple guys this afternoon on TEAM in Van…I wonder if Ek does his blogging in his underwear? ;-/

thanks for keeping the Canadian coastline safe, even if it is just an aside to keeping the homeland secure!

Not to ange you Arik, but i think you might be over reacting.

I mean, there are some pretty terrible bloggers out there and i believe they massively out number the good ones. You are one of the good ones. Just assume he was talking about the morons. Because i do.

by Jeremywilhelm on Dec 2, 2011 4:58 PM PST via mobile reply actions

Except it wasn’t just an offhand comment against bloggers, he attributed poor MSM writing to us. Nobody reads the terrible Flames bloggers, they read the quality ones.

Us as in M&G? I didn’t catch a reference to us in particular?

I’m sorry but if you were offended by what Feaster said today, then you are far too thin skinned, and take yourself far too seriously.

Bloggers seem to have that reputation with a lot of different leagues, it’s not just the Flames and their management

by Adi C on Dec 2, 2011 10:12 PM PST reply actions

even within the nhl though-you have teams like the flyers, sharks and especially capitals-they grant these guys full time access and treat them as regular media members. more and more this is becoming the norm.

Perspective

Its good that you take pride in your work. But I think you’re being a little oversensitive.

1) First off, he didn’t refer to this site specifically. As alluded to, he may have very well been referring to a lot of other sites which do exist to spread baseless rumors.
2) Secondly, is it possible Feaster was humouring the media by playing off stereotypes? Like it or not, “blogger in the basement etc” is the current incarnation of a blogger stereotype.
3) Having perused this site casually, I can tell you that a lot of the bloggers on this site (again, not necessarily you, but other people who post articles on here) have often used unflattering descriptors toward members of Flames management i.e., Sutter is an idiot, Feaster is an… etc. I personally doubt that either of them read this site, but if your colleagues throw around comments like that in a public forum what is the big deal about a comment like Feaster made?

So I understand where you are coming from but at the same time I believe you need to keep things in perspective. You work hard. Great. They’re public figures that expose themselves to criticism by the very nature of their job. You run a well known blog. Hence, you also expose yourself to callous comments (that may or may not be baseless).

Either way, keep up the good work on the blog. Maybe through your work you’ll one day change the stereotype. But until then, taking some flak is part of the job.

by JHMN on Dec 3, 2011 9:23 AM PST reply actions

1. then perhaps he should have specified.
2. if you listen to the press conference, it is quite clear in this inflection he was not being overtly humorous.
3. “feaster is an idiot because he threw away an asset for a guy who played less then 10 games and was then waived.” that’s different then what he’s saying because I have cause to state something like that, and I am being specific to the person who performed the action that I am critiquing. feaster had neither.

the fact that I am credentialed by the team (in whatever limited fashion) suggests to me the stereotype has been changed. apparently he’s failed to notice it.

by Justin Azevedo on Dec 3, 2011 10:17 AM PST up reply actions

The point here is that the MSM were the ones who started a rumour, it had nothing to do with bloggers. Taking flak is one thing if you are taking flak over something you said or did. Taking flak for something which had nothing to do with you is quite irritating and would piss me off too.

by Subversive on Dec 3, 2011 3:38 PM PST up reply actions

while i might be guilty of rumourmongering for a laugh on a single, solitary occasion (and it might’ve involved jarome), i find the “blogging-in-underwear” stereotype as bullshit as so many racial epithets that have come before.

also ? if feaster was referring to me, specifically, making up rumours i think that’s AWESOME.

Only 1 Part Bothered Me...

And, I’m talking about Feaster’s press conference.

I hate how he Americanizes the pronunciation of Giordano.

He says, Gee-or-don-oh. And, right after they re-played that scrum, the doofus doing the update on 960 said the same thing,

With all due respect to Arik and any other Americano’s … it’s Gee-or-DAN-oh.

These are the real issues, gang.

by Scott Lepp on Dec 3, 2011 3:33 PM PST reply actions

If by “Americanization” you mean “Italianization” then yes. It’s really “Gee-or-dah-no” which I feel Feaster’s is much closer. Make sure you wave your hands around when you say it too. And eat lasagna afterwards.

by ArikJames on Dec 3, 2011 5:03 PM PST up reply actions

Great piece AJ.

Feaster should really apologize for that kind of comment, and is clearly not in touch with the currrent media world.

As you noted several of these “basement dwellers” on SBN are journalism students. I guess he also doesn’t realize that James Mirtle was one of the first SBN hockey guys.

Not sure where your overall relationship is with the Calgary media, but we’ve earned a great amount of respect from several key Montreal guys who recognize and acknowledge our work.

I had the chance to meet Haley at the Heritage Classic and she did a great job there. At the same time, I dug up a couple pieces of info/asked some good questions in the scrums before the MSMers could. I got some good response from the “big boys” for my work.

They know that I and the EOTP crew do this as a part time basis, and are scattered across Canada, and they also know that we give them equal respect, even if our opinions differ.

What separates SBN, and other good blogs, from the MSM is their ability to think outside the box in terms of analysis, and they don’t just look at the score sheet.

Unfortunately the Canadiens do not offer creds to online media (team policy), but do keep us on their press release lists. It’s a step in the right direction for us.

Montreal has the biggest rumor mill going in the NHL, and it’s fueled by MSMers. So fortunately for us, Pierre Gauthier can’t call out anyone, especially bloggers in that manner.

Now if you’ll excuse me, I have to go upstairs and put on my pants.

I’m a little late for the dance on this one but nice post Arik. Its holiday party season. Feaster is such a puppet that speaks out of his rear that I’m glad his true colors are starting to come out. And honestly, he does what he’s told and it wouldn’t surprise me if in fact they were considering trades for Jarome. This is just spin if you ask me…but its a poor job of it. But to throw bloggers under the bus is absolutely bushleague…it’s an easy way out for a guy who doesn’t want to piss off the mainstream hockey media because he doesn’t know just how soon he’ll become a part of them again. I wonder if he was in his basement and underwear when you used to blog nonsense for THN (his job prior to becoming K Squared’s lieutenant).

Way to go to bat for yourself and the whole community Arik!

Great post

I just heard about Feaster’s comments during the game last night (had the Flames feed online) and did a silent facepalm. You give a great rebuttal and I appreciate your passion for blogging and desire to see it shown more respect.
