Hot Coals for Thurs

CALGARY, CANADA - OCTOBER 26: Head coach Brent Sutter is his usual self beaming love and joy into the universe as he says pull my finger to the ref. (Photo by Dale MacMillan/Getty Images)

The Flames knocked off a relatively solid win against the Avs to get back to ankle deep in the hole instead of knee deep. This slow start in the month of Oct is a larger concern than most are recognizing.

Why? The schedule in Oct, excluding the season opener against the Penguins, has been much softer than it will be in Nov with the Canucks, Red Wings, Sabres and Blackhawks all on the scorecard.

The Flames have played better than their record imo and probably should be 4-2-2 at this point but the fact is they are 3-4-1 and staring up from the basement with the Jackets and Preds.

  • Little technical info on NHL rules on the Rene Bourque / Olli Jokinen EN goal last night. (TSN)
  • Taylor Hall had his Twitter account hacked and the first clue was that he insulted Oiler fans and said he was going to the Flames (Puck Daddy) Yeah right, as if the Flames want Hall, that is your give away, now RNH, different story.
  • Kyle Turris trade rumors? Yawn - I don't know what is wrong with Bourque, Stajan and Hagman for Turris and a pick ; ) - oh right, the Yotes don't want to spend a penny over the Cap floor. (Yahoo)
  • Evander Kane requests a trade? (Canoe) Rumor, rumor, rumor, it is just so early in the season for all these rumors.
  • Reps from the Flames meet with other teams and NHL VP Bill Daly to request consideration for a Western AHL League (TSN)

the possibility of any of my money going to arena projects angers me…but I’ll be even more indignant if one of the cities gets the cash and the other doesn’t.

I agree and personally I think the Edmonton deal stinks. But it is a question of fairness.

I personally love the Saddledome, it is like that home you grow up in as a kid. You never forget it.

The Rangers have poured a ton of money into MSG to upgrade and retrofit it for the modern era, if free money is to be had I would much prefer it is spent this way. Rather than blowing up the Dome and turning it to dust. It is an iconic image and a brilliant piece of architecture.

Seems like the votes are looking for a new arena and that is not my preference but oh well. I don’t want a Calgary version of the ACC myself…

I’d hate to say goodbye to the ’dome.

as would I, but it’s already undergone a major renovation and the roof is costing the owners revenue. I think they go with a whole new one.

Whatever the Flames choose on the arena issue, if they try some of the ridiculous shenanigans instigated by Katz et al up north, I’ll be publishing daily screeds on the matter. The public subsidizing shiny palaces for millionaires and billionaires is absolutely nonsense. It make poor economic sense (aside form furthering the owners bottom-line) and makes hockey a more expensive game for the rest of us in the long run.

“makes hockey a more expensive game for the rest of us in the long run.”

Yes. Exactly.

Tonight’s game better be on instead of this goofy stick-and-ball thing. This is the first game I’m actually around to watch in a week and a half.
