Game 7 Recap: Not Exactly Fair

Ten Thoughts

-Olli Jokinen, man. He had a 10-bell chance with Pekka Rinne 5 feet out of the crease on the other side of the net, leaving it wide open...and he hits the fucking post. I would like to say I couldn't believe it, but I'd be lying.

-Definitely the best game I've seen from Scott Hannan as a Flame. Probably the only move I've unilaterally agreed with Jay Feaster on. Likewise, a nice, solid "bounceback" game from Mark Giordano. He and Hannan combined to be +26 in Corsi on the afternoon. Both of them were positive on the ES scoring chances, too.

-Brent Sutter was thoroughly out-coached today. Even with last change, it seemed as though he struggled to get the line matchups he wanted.

Star-divide

-The Flames did an excellent job of getting pucks to the net in the game while also doing an excellent job of keeping pucks away from their net. The +20 in Corsi, +19 in shot differential and +4 at in scoring chances at EV are all indicators of that. I hesitate to say it was score effects as the pressure was consistent throughout the game.

-A really strong game from Miikka Kiprusoff. Can't fault him on either of the goals (one being a crazy puck that bounced off of bodies and sticks the second coming off of a 2-on-1), so that combined with Nashville's ineptitude makes that sub-900 SV% irrelevant in my eyes.

-Tim Jackman's goal was totally in and I think it's absurd that there's a grey area between "penalty" and "goal" when it comes to goaltender interference. Either it's a penalty or it's a goal. Leaving that open to interpretation is absolutely moronic.

-A lot better on the special teams side of things today. The PP was actually able to gain the zone on a consistent basis and the PK kept the shots to the periphery.

-Jarome. Dude. You need to start creating more chances. I know Legwand's their top shutdown guy and you played a lot of minutes against him, but 85k should be worth more then 2 EV scoring chances. I still love you though.

-Not totally sure how Alex Tanguay was -2 in Corsi when the team was +20, but whatever. Tangs didn't have his best game out there today.

-There were a couple times where Jay Bouwmeester jumped up in the offensive zone and was wide open at the back door-but for whatever reason he never got the puck. Disappointing.

Reverse Three Stars

1. Cory Sarich-Stupid penalties, stupid positioning, stupid puck handling. Really the only outright bad performance by a Flame on the day.
2. Chris Butler-Actually had a pretty good game, but the 2-on-1 immediately after and 2nd goal against were the result of his horrible pinch.
3. Alex Tanguay-Fought the puck today and looked a little sluggish.

Finally...

The Flames did pretty much everything they needed to do to win except actually put the puck past the goalie-but it easily could've been a game that was 2-2. For the most part, if they play like that every game they'll be successful. The Flames' next game is Wednesday against Colorado.

Goals? Disallowed

I wasn’t able to watch most of the game. Was there more than 1 goal disallowed. I heard the Jackman one on 960.

It was just Jackman’s that was disallowed, but I cannot stress how great of a chance Jokinen’s post was. He has to be cursed. Only explanation at this point.

Another defenceman needed

I believe Calgary is close to having a playoff team, when do you understand that you aren’t a threat for a cup and start to rebuild? Alternatively, make some deals-a defenceman is needed. What is Brian McCabe doing-retired-he lives in Calgary-send a cab to pick him up before next practise. Clear the crease, stop the rush, and forward the puck up the boards-must be a veteran available and if he has some speed awesome, even slower hitting types can work.

the problem with signing a free agent is that the Flames would then be at the 50 contract limit and that limits what they can do trade-wise, for example. but I agree in that a quality #4 dman who can play top minutes at least semi-consistently would be nice and mccabe can probably still do that

The frustrating thing with the Flames so far is they’re losing the games they deserve to lose and losing games they deserve to win as well. Lots of other teams are winning games they deserve to lose, ie Nashville yesterday. I don’t know if the Flames have had any games like that so far, and it’s the difference in the standings right now. What makes yesterday’s game even more annoying is the fact the Preds had allowed 16 goals in their last 4 games, and then they manage to stymie the Flames? Sure Rinne is good but he hadn’t been very good on their losing streak. Funny how teams always seem to break their skids against the Flames. But it’s like you said Justin, if they keep playing games like this then eventually (we hope) they’ll start putting together wins.

One of the big knocks on Sutter in Jersey was he never tried to match lines. His train of thought is it should matter who you play against just play hard.

This, in my mind, is pure idiocy. This, in my mind, is why the Flames will miss the playoffs again and hopefully Sutter is shitcanned.

Only Watched Bits and Pieces of the 3rd, but...

I was impressed with what I saw. Now, I was only glancing at the TV for a couple minutes at a time, but I saw a team that looked to be fighting for loose pucks and the effort-level seemed to be much higher than it was against NYR.

Of course, I was only watching when they were trailing. When the game was scoreless, were they still generating all sorts of chances or were they a lot more lazy like they were against the Rangers? I have a sneaking suspicion they never turn on the jets until the situation starts to get a little more dire – as in, 3rd period with a 1-goal deficit. Had they attacked the Rangers like they did the Preds in the 3rd, they would have won that game handily. But, it was a tie game, so why not coast to the finish…. which is what they did against NYR in a tie-game scenario.

Lack of effort/urgency cost them against NYR – and the ever-popular bad luck/hot goalie game got them against the Preds. I guess if I’m looking for a silver lining, it’s that I did see some effort, which I was starting to wonder about.
