The Backup
Henrik Karlsson has been sheltered somewhat by Brent Sutter, but it is paying off as he is on pace to have the best statistical season of any Flame backup since Kiprusoff arrived.
Since the lockout Henrik Karlsson is the 7th guy to serve as Mikka Kiprusoff's caddy. If he continues to play at the pace he has he will easily have the best stats of any backup here in a long time. Here is the table :
| Minutes | Wins | Losses | OTL | GAA | sv% | ||
| To date | 538 | 3 | 3 | 3 | 2.57 | 0.91 | |
| 2010-11 (proj) | 979.16 | 5.5 | 5.5 | 5.5 | |||
| 2009-10 | 712 | 5 | 4 | 0 | 2.95 | 0.894 | Mcelhinney, Toskala |
| 2008-09 | 518 | 1 | 6 | 1 | 3.59 | 0.89 | Mcelhinney |
| 2007-08 | 559 | 3 | 4 | 0 | 3.67 | 0.909 | Joseph, Mcelhinney |
| 2006-07 | 533 | 3 | 5 | 1 | 3.6 | 0.89 | Mclennan |
| 2005-06 | 584 | 4 | 4 | 0 | 3.8 | 0.878 | Sauve, Boucher |
| 581.2 | 3.2 | 4.6 | 0.4 | 3.522 | 0.8922 |
As you can see goalies not named Kiprusoff have averaged only 581 minutes per year over the past 5 seasons. With Karlsson already at 538, 1000 minutes are not out of the question. In terms of gathering points, the backups have averaged 3.2 wins and 0.4 OTL - a whopping 6.8 points in the standings. With 9 points earned by the team with Henrik in the net so far, makes one think 15 or 16 points are possible. Finally the 2.57 average and .910 sv % easily out pace any of his predecessors.

Holy shit. We’ve had 7(!) backups? More then just the stats, the team actually gives a damn when he’s in the net. Last year, they just kinda accepted that any game CuMac played was going to be a loss. Those 6 extra points he might earn would have gotten the Flames into the playoffs last year. :(

After the win last night Curtis McE is 566 minutes 3-4-1 , 3.18, .907 with one SO. He had lit it up last year in Anaheim – 5-1-2 after the trade and it looked like Calgary had given up too soon. Not so says this years stats.
Did you see the cut he got on his neck from a teammate’s skate? Scary stuff. He was OK after getting stitched up though.
