White Signs, Arbitration Avoided

With a last minute deal, the Flames have avoided the potentially nasty arbitration process and signed defenseman Ian White to a one year, $2.999M contract early this morning.

As expected, Cap Geek is showing that this puts Calgary approximately $2.4 million over the salary cap.

Now with the final major piece in place (for now), it's time to clarify the Kotalik situation, and deal with one or both (please make that both, Daz) of the Staios and Sarich contracts to free up some cap room.

Good. Now let’s get rid of Staios, Sarich, Kotalik, and Ivanans. We can call up a defenceman, 2 wingers, and 1-2 centres (depending on Langkows health).

Pelech and some combination of Backlund, Sutter, Stone, Neimisz, and Cunning.

Interesting number

At 2.99 I think a challenge was laid down to the player and his agent – If you think you can get more than $3m – we will take the 2 draft picks instead as an RFA.

Minus Kotalik=1million left

There should be some money left once Kotalik is farmed out. White now has to deliver more points than Phaneuf to make Sutter look good on the trade with TO. How about Staios? Clear him out, and look at signing Giordano to a long term deal. Let a rookie come into the fold from the farm-like Pelech or Kronwall. I think Conroy might even get a deal if there is some money left, not sure about Dawes, he must of butted heads with the Sutters. I agree with Beeker, except that Conroy may come back if there are no bites soon.

White doesn’t have to outscore Phaneuf, only out defend him.

White doesn’t even have to outdo Phaneuf in any area to make the trade look good; Stajan and Hagman are both upgrades on Shoestring, as the PPP have dubbed him, and Aulie is a prospect of only moderate potential. The fact that White currently IS better than Phaneuf defensively, and probably offensively (less high and wide) at less than half the price means the trade was a resounding success.

White was the best addition

To clarify, White can be as good or better than Phaneuf, which makes Sutter look like a genius. The fact that he was a soon to be free-agent made it a gamble, relief now that he signed. If he didn’t get signed then the trade would have been a mistake. Make no mistake Phaneuf is a top defencemen, TO made him captain and he will be a huge impact player. Hagman and Stajan are valuable, so well done Sutter.
What the heck is with the obsession with Jokinen? If he scores 40 goals he will probably still be raked over the coals. He will be the whipping boy, much the same for Kotalik who never will be welcomed by the fans or media now. We need cap space, whats coming on the trade front? Everyone enjoys a good trade rumour.
