Free Agency Open Thread
You know the drill: Who goes where and for how much? Early on in the first day of free agency, Sergei Gonchar has signed with the Ottawa Senators (3 years/5.5M) and Martin Biron has joined the Rangers (1 year/875K), while defenceman Andrej Meszaros has been traded to Philadelphia for a second-round pick. In Flames news, Nigel Dawes has cleared waivers and will be bought out as per the Herald's Vicki Hall on Twitter, and it has just been confirmed that Alex Tanguay has signed a one-year deal with the Flames for $1.7M (via La Presse). Unfortunately I will be working all day as of 12PM, so I can't guarantee instant updates, but I'll do my best--stay tuned!

I’m going to wait for TSN to confirm the Tanguay signing, but as-is I am optimistic about what he can still do.

Very glad to see Tanguay back in red. I’ve always liked him and think hope he brings some life back to Iggy’s game.
According to the NHL.com FA Blog, rumors are swirling about Calgary being in talks with Beantown regarding Savard coming out west. Would be interesting if Flames can dump some of the high price D for him maybe.
Not sure it’d be the best move they can make, I’ve always been very ambivalent about Savard. He seems to have great potential but just coasts sometimes (like when he was last here).
yeah, the “/” defaults to bold.

What would you have to offer?

~ You can take Kris Chucko. ~
Regehr is the best shutdown DMan in the division, and Dawes/Glencross are good guys on cheap contracts who bitchslap 3rd liners.

It was a unique situation. Back in 2001 (Maybe 02? Can’t remember) Greg Gilbert was the coach. Savard was a lot more immature then, and would frequently spar with the coach publicly. He’s learned and matured, and is a lot better now that he is less self centred.

Yeah, when he was traded it served as a wake-up call. I think he was under the impression he was untouchable, and then bam! he was gone. He is definitely no longer like that, as you said.

I think that the org is blaming him for that 2MM call. Besides, you guys are extremely deep down the middle. I think if I was in your position, I would trade Savard, extend Bergeron and take the risk of having Seguin on the 3rd line.

But Krejci is coming off surgery too. If hes not the same all of a sudden we are weak in center.
and the 2MM call I always blame on the coach

I would rather take a risk on the Hip/Wrist injury then a brain injury, especially with the age difference.

Yes. I think the Bruins can be a top-3 contender.
Without Savard, I question a playoff spot.

Did Daz just have some curious fetish as to what a Tanguay-Joker-Iginla line would look like? Listening to the Fan is funny cause Kerr and crew actually have to act like this isn’t completely fucking insane.

HAHAHAHA!
I’m living in China right now and just woke up…fired up the internet…hit up ol’ TSN.CA, and BOOM!!!! INSTANT FACEPALM!!! Ah reality, you truly can be stranger than fiction can’t you, you little bitch.
Sadness, miss you Nyzerman!
But… I wouldn’t have wanted the Flames to pay that much, 1.4M per is a lot of dough for a 4th line guy.
I can deal with re-acquiring Jokinen, but I am really disappointed in losing Nystrom. Hugely underrated guy, and I am betting will be wearing a C for the Wild before this contract expires.
Would you have signed Nystrom at $1.4MM?
I don’t know that he can step above the fourth line. When we’re buying out contracts like Dawes (!!!) we’d better be damn sure Nystrom can play third in the LW batting order before paying him that level of $.
by R O on Jul 1, 2010 6:48 PM PDT up reply actions
I would have. Dude scored 11 goals playing half the year with a bum wing. He’s got the heart, leadership and desire that many have argued the team as a whole lacks.
IMO, if Nystrom was healthy last year, he’d be making quite a bit more than $1.4 million this. Especially given what Manny Malholtra got from Vancouver.
