A Case of the Mondays: The Calm Before the Storm

With the recent Jaroslav Halak trade and the two deals involving the Nashville Predators (trading coveted soon-to-be-UFA defenceman Dan Hamhuis to the Flyers and captain Jason Arnott to New Jersey) over the weekend, trade rumours and speculation are increasing in both frequency and duration heading into the NHL Draft this Saturday and the upcoming free agent frenzy. While all has been quiet on the Flames' front recently, Sutter rarely stands pat at the Draft, as we've seen evidence of over the past few years when he dealt for Alex Tanguay, Mike Cammalleri, and last summer when he swapped Jordan Leopold and a 3rd round pick for the rights to Jay Bouwmeester. For the Flames, and many other NHL squads, this week may indeed be the calm before the storm.

The pundits keep saying its going to be a year with more deals than usual…a LOT of teams looking to get involved.

Maybe Sutter can trade to get his 1st back from the Yotes.

It should be interesting though. The NW is in danger of being pure suckage after being the dominant conference not too long ago.

Seems to be the Central now.

MG out here is looking for guys to fill holes, you guys are looking for the same.

Colorado and Minny will want to get better, and Edmonton has only one way to go.

Here’s hoping…whomever deals for whomever and whatnot, the GMs for our teams make the “right” deal.

Cap number?

Has the cap number been officially announced ? If it has I missed it. Rumours have it going up $2 million. Wouldn’t that make things a little clearer going in to this weekend with respect to trades ?

I think there are alot of teams who have contracts they would like to move – so there could be alot of talk but not alot of action. Just in the NW, Sarich, Staios, Bieksa and Souray are dmen that their teams would probably like to do without.

Having said that though, Colorado has a stupid amount of cap space – Minnesota less so – but these guys, along with LA have the potential to spend big. Coyotes will be nowhere near the cap – and will likely just qualify their UFA’s and bring up Turris and Boedker.

There will be a bunch of value UFA’s if you wait until late July I think.

I think they’re officially announcing the cap number on the same day as the Draft

Or maybe a little sooner than that. Supposedly the players will vote very soon.

If they vote for the escalator clause, it goes up 2 mil…or just stays the same.

Personally, I like the increase, but Shoalts wrote a great argument for how some clubs with some extra Cap room to throw around ( of course written as to how it would benefit they mighty Leaf…but its the Globe…what can you do?)

Talented guys have to leave places like Chicago and Philly to make their Caps work…not having the 2 nmil would make them squirm even more.
