Around SBN: Missouri Survives Scare, Louisville And Marquette Roll

Sportsdaily.ru is reporting that New York Rangers unrestricted free agent center Olli Joikinen could be headed to Dinamo Minsk of the KHL next season. In an article discussing key developments so far in the KHL off-season, author Maxim Grushev states the following in regards to the Belorussian club: "The main transfer news in the coming days could be the signing of a contract with Finnish forward Olli Jokinen, who spent last season with the Rangers. In conjunction with Spiridonov, Stümpel and Glazachev from Barys, the Finn should become a leader of the updated Minsk [club]."

That could have been our 5,250,000 coming off the books.

Well if he does end up leaving it’s been a very bumpy ride for the Joker, I’ll miss seeing is face and him speaking.

So if he signs with a KHL team, is his remaining salary removed from the cap?

It was removed when we traded him. There’s no extra relief.

If, hypothetically, a player is signed in the NHL but chooses to play in a different league, their salary is pretty much voided, IIRC

It depends. If the player is bought out, the salary stays. If he is loaned, the salary goes. There are a bunch of other situations, but these are the two most common ones.

I don’t know, he’s a UFA this summer so I’d guess that once he gets his final pay cheque from the Rangers, that’ll be it

Is he even going to be good in a different league?

by R O on May 5, 2010 1:32 PM PDT reply actions

Who knows. It’s strange that he would sign in Europe now without waiting to see if he gets an offer from any NHL teams, unless he knows that he’s going to get more money over there. Even with the results of the past few seasons taken into consideration, you have to think some team would take a chance on him. Litter Box Cats has a good piece on this.
