Flames add Another Defenceman, Water still Wet
The Flames have signed undrafted 21-year-old defenceman Chris Breen to an entry-level deal; the 6'7", 225 lb. blueliner spent five seasons in the OHL. Described as a stay at home defenceman, Breen scored a career-high 4 goals and 14 points this past season, splitting time between the Peterborough Petes and the Erie Otters. He also appeared in one game with the Abbotsford Heat on a try-out basis, accumulating one assist and 4 PIMS.
Breen's addition likely means this will be the end of the road for one or more of the Flames' defensive prospects, with T.J. Brodie and Tim Erixon also looking to begin their pro careers sometime in the near future.

I doubt Erixon comes over within the next year or two. Brodie will definitely be with the Heat this year, barring a phenomenal training camp and making the NHL.
I don’t know, Erixon is 19 and already looks to be one of the best defensive prospects the Flames have. He could pull a Backlund and come over to NA to play junior before turning pro, but I would expect to see him over here by the time turns 20.
Maybe, he is progressing very quickly, but with the amount of propective depth at defense, it is probably better for him to play Elite level hockey in Sweden than he is to play junior or AHL hockey over here.

backlund was getting minimal icetime on an allsvenskan level team. ie: not ideal.
erixon is getting decent minutes on an elite league squad. ie: not going anywhere.

I want Erixon in the dub.
But this guy is massive, I hope he can deliver.
Where the Windsor Spitfires destroy the WHL.
Why? He is playing at a higher level than the Dub right now in Sweden. The team he plays with is one of the better clubs in the highest level league in Sweden.
Keep him there.

Erixon won’t cross the pond for junior hockey. He’s playing pro now. The only reason he leaves Sweden is to play pro hockey in NA.
I give him one more year in the SEL.
Co-sign. If he was in a spot like Joni Ortio, that would be a different matter.

agreed
Don’t even need to think of Erixon this year. Leave him in Sweden and have him play in the AHL next year.
With 6 guys under contract – plus White; and with at least 3 guys knocking on the door (Pelech,Negrin, Brodie) and a fall back guy in Kronwall, defence is not a problem position.
