First Round Finale Open Thread

After the seventh of eight first round series was decided last night with Detroit's victory over the Coyotes, the second round matchups will be finalized tonight with the conclusion of game seven of the Caps/Habs series in Washington. After being down 3-1 in the series, the Canadiens won two straight to tie the series on the back of some phenomenal goaltending by Jaroslav Halak and some opportunistic scoring by Mike Cammalleri, amongst others. Former Hitmen star and World Junior gold medal winner Karl Alzner was called up by the Caps to replace the injured Tom Poti, and will play with AHL teammate and Canadian public enemy number one John Carlson. I don't have a particular rooting interest in this series, as much as it pains me I like seeing Cammalleri do well and Washington is always an exciting team to watch, but part of me still wants to see them choke. Anways, I'm off to work now so debate your loyalties and discuss the potential of various second-round match-ups in the comments.

There are so many reasons I want Les Habitants to win this game. Mostly because I can’t stand Ovechkin.

Also, I’d like to point out RJ Umberger is quite correct ATM.

LOL?

I thought for sure the Caps would win. Sweep, maybe 5. 30 more points and 100 more goals wasn’t enough, though.

Nice work by the Habs.

Justin- I’m not sure if you watched any of the series, but it was nice work by the Hab. Halak. Because the rest of the team was hilariously outplayed. Just look at the shot totals.

NBC has Philly and Boston but you know who will cry the most. ESPN as the only player they know can go and try get another hole in one.

Perfect Stanley Cup Final.
Montreal vs. San Jose.

Wheaties and Hitmen.......... The Dub rules over Canada.

To piss off ESPN

Montreal vs Vancouver would be the ultimate “ignore the Finals please” occurrence.

by brisulph on Apr 29, 2010 6:30 AM PDT up reply actions

ESPN? What are you talking about? ESPN doesn’t carry the NHL.

by ArikJames on Apr 29, 2010 7:21 AM PDT up reply actions

Does ESPN even do sports anymore? I thought it was now a sports celebrity segment of TMZ.

by Colin S on Apr 30, 2010 6:21 AM PDT up reply actions

I refer to their focusing on two players and Detroit

No one else exists. if they are going to not even pretend hockey is a sport anymore, then why give them what little they focus on?

by brisulph on May 3, 2010 5:00 AM PDT up reply actions

I don’t know how I ended up cheering for Montreal even though I chose Washington to win the series, it just sort of happened. I don’t particularly dislike the Caps but sometimes I have a hard time separating my hatred for Ovechkin in international play from NHL play. Halak was incredible, PIT/MTL is going to be a great series.

For me it was Green vs Cammaleri. Not dissatisfied with how things turned out, really.

I will never understand the Ovechkin hatred in Canada. That guy rules.

In other news, I will never forgive anyone who wants to see either Detroit or Montreal in the Cup final. You will be dead to me. There’s enough entitled fans of those teams already.

by ArikJames on Apr 29, 2010 5:45 AM PDT reply actions

I personally have no ill will for Ovie

The hate I don’t get is the intense burning bile that gets lobbed at Crosby (particularly south of the border… long before the Olympics no less).

by brisulph on Apr 29, 2010 6:31 AM PDT up reply actions

Most of the Crosby hate didn’t start til after the Olympics, aside from fans in DC. For me, I feel a mix of begrudging respect and strong dislike for him. He’s an absolutely fantastic player, but I can’t stand his on-ice attitude.
I know the “whining” thing is overdone and everyone’s tired of it, but it still bothers me and a lot of American sports fans. There’s a reason professional soccer isn’t popular here and the NFL and MLB are.
So to reiterate: I don’t hate Crosby, I’m just not a fan of his. Most people (that aren’t DC or Philly fans) feel the same way. Also he’s incredibly bland off the ice. We’re a country that wants Chad Ochocinco and TO and Brett Favre drama.

by ArikJames on Apr 29, 2010 7:29 AM PDT up reply actions

I don’t like the style of game he plays. Yes, he is skilled and exciting, but he also puts players at more risk then usual when he’s out there.

It’s like any other sport or profession. That’s the game you sign up to play. Ovechkin is a lot of things, and yes, reckless is one, but he’s not Matt Cooke. He doesn’t head hunt. And really, if the NHL actually bothered to switched to soft pads, etc., it wouldn’t be a concern.

by ArikJames on Apr 29, 2010 10:14 AM PDT up reply actions

I’m just saying there are certian players who create more dangerous situations then others. He is one of them, and he plays that way on purpose. I don’t believe he wants to hurt anyone, but he does.

I know a few people I talked to about him in his rookie year even, who hated on him for being a “whiny diver”. I don’t think he complains about anything much more than most players, and if he was a diver, he certainly isn’t now.

by SmellOfVictory on Apr 29, 2010 11:09 AM PDT up reply actions

I agree that he had a tendency to complain during his rookie year, and his reputation then was probably deserved. But don’t forget that this is a kid who spent his entire youth career being gunned for, and transferred teams and towns on a regular basis because other players were out to hurt him. He was bound to feel a bit…attacked. The whining is non-existent now, as is the diving, and when he talks to the refs, it’s in his capacity as captain. He is a stand-up guy: sticks up for his teammates, accepts responsibility when things go wrong, and doesn’t shirk the media. Plus he’s crazy talented.

He might be bland off the ice, but mostly because he’s well coached – he’s been doing media since he was nine years old, and he knows that he can’t say anything that might be misconstrued because everyone is just waiting for him to slip up. To be honest, I’m sick of Ovechkin’s schtick — it doesn’t seem genuine to me anymore, just like an ego trip, and I hate that. Give me the unassuming, quiet, humble Canadian boy any day.

Sarah has it spot on

He USED TO whine and dive in his rookie year, but does not do it anymore. It is amazing how people make up their minds and that is it.

by brisulph on May 3, 2010 5:02 AM PDT up reply actions

I think he’s a fantastic player and love watching him play in the NHL, but I think it’s the Canada vs. Russia thing. I’ve been holding a grudge ever since Russia beat us in the Worlds a few years back and he went and dug the loonie out of centre ice and showed everyone and put it on a necklace. I don’t understand the Crosby hate in Canada, I get it more in the US, especially post Olympics ;)

Americans dislike Crosby because he plays the game only and is the “Canadian Kid”. He doesn’t act like a rockstar and a complete jackass on the ice like Ovechkin. Which is why Ovechkin is loved by the average American.

Money says you’re not an American. Clearly you are qualified to speak for me.

As much as I hate Patrick Kane, I will be cheering for Chicago harder than any other team in round two of the playoffs.

I’m pulling hard for the Habs, but if the Canadiens could only win if the the Canucks also won, I would happily wave farewell to Les Habitants. Man do I hate the ’Nucks. I will be rocking my ’Hawks shirt every game day this series.

Did everyone read this piece about why VAN fans are the worst in Canada? It was gold, the reaction was even better.

I loved this when I saw it! I agree wholeheartedly; I know that there are great Canucks fans, they just seem few and far between! Sooooo tired of the Vancouver media right now, all "We’re better this year, the ‘Hawks are worse, we’re going to take this series!’ I really really really hope the Hakws go crazy on Saturday night, and Lu blows it!

by SarahM on Apr 29, 2010 4:49 PM PDT up reply actions

The Crosby hate is ridiculous. The kid is obviously one of, if not the, best player(s) in the world. If you hate him it’s only because he kills your team day in and out. That whining and diving BS is just that…BS.

Ovi is still awesome. Yes he is a little rough around the edges (crazy) but amazing none the less.
