My God, Damien. My God.
Toronto Star columnist and TSN Tradecentre expert Damien Cox believes the time has come in which Dion Phaneuf becomes the Captain of the Leafs. If he could grow a mustache, hit the general vicinity of the net, actually fight, and be a pillar in the community, the similarities between Dion and Wendel Clark would be uncanny.

funny, i wrote a thingy on dion just yesterday cause i can’t believe that leafs fans think he’s good. i really can’t believe it !!! in saying that, i wonder if he wouldn’t be an awesome captain; if the guys in the room showed him the respect that he thinks he deserves, perhaps it would be good for the guy. who the eff knows.
i wonder if giguere hates him yet ?
Not that I’ve ever really been a huge Phaneuf fan or anything, but it doesn’t really seem fair to blame him for the first 2 goals that you posted. The first one was scored because the forward who was covering the guy forgot how to turn. Phaneuf really isn’t in a good position to do anything without the benefit of hindsight. The second one is a 5 on 3 and 22 decided to rush the point, leaving Phaneuf with 3 guys all around the net to cover.
Of course, maybe I just never expected that much from him, but for those two goals I feel it’s a bit unfair to think he needs to make up for all of the Leafs defensive breakdowns.
i address that in my post; “you can argue that the leafs have a lot of problems defensively and that dion is really just a bystander in all of it. you could insist that the leafs’ forwards need to be more responsible, and that the goaltending needs to be more reliable….”
i’m just pointing out that (in those three clips), he’s in/near the crease and engaging the stick when he should be engaging the man. this was THE most frustrating thing when he was in calgary…. i’m not suggesting he’s responsible for the three goals against….

Leaf fans before the trade: “He’s the most overrated bum in the league!”
Leaf fans after the trade: “OMG! OMG! OMG! Franchise defenceman!”
Honestly, from what I’ve seen, he’s been no better and no worse than he was here. The perception of Dion in Toronto has changed entirely because he wears a blue jersey instead of a red one now.
also, this article is entitled “braindead” and boasts a picture of dion phaneuf. i thought it was kindof hilarious but it seems that the author was just having a bit of a scattered morning and the post has nothing to do with my/our thoughts about their #3.
I saw that after you linked it. I never really noticed how massive his chin is.

Although I wasn’t a member of the “Dion Phanuef Hater” club when he was in Calgary, I think that suggesting he be made captain after a handful of games in Toronto is ridiculous. Damien Cox spewing ridiculous opinions? Who would have thought it possible? Dion may be a lot of things, but I highly doubt he would be a stabilizing force as captain.
Then again, it’s not exactly like the Leafs are brimming with leadership potential.
It’s Luke Schenn’s captaincy to lose. I didn’t find Dion to be a very good leader and for most of this season when he was Flame I wanted Lanks to take the “A” permanently from him.
But Noof is only 24 he’s still got many more years of growing to do and realize that the fans and ownership in Toronto covet this guy and he’ll have to pick his game up in what is the most heated hockey market in the world.
With Tomas Kaberle ultimately on his way out Mike Komisarek will become the most eldest on the Leaf Blue Line I believe so it will be Kommie’s, Noof’s and Schenn’s C to battle over.
What you see is, What you get.
GO FLAMES GO!!!
no way luke schenn gets captaincy with the leafs in the next five years.
ps: kaberle is a relic on that team and will get pushed out just like most leaf players do. too bad, actually, cause he’s probably one of the elite blueliners in the league. if it was MY team, i’d build around him and give him the C….
speaking of which, why is there no captain on the leafs ?!?!??!

I found out today Kaberle is the only player still remaining on the team from the pre-Wilson era. That is a huge turnaround in a couple seasons.
There is no captain because Burke and Wilson didn’t have a player that they thought was worthy of it.

As far as I’m concerned they still don’t. Frankly, I think the Phaneaf trade looks better and better (for us) with each passing day.
unless kaberle has no interest in being the captain, i don’t see why you overlook him.
am i the only kaberle supporter in the world ?

I like what Kaberle brings to the table. But he doesn’t have the leadership Burke is looking for-because if he did, he would have the “C”.

how about the fact that the fans want him out and burkey has no choice but to shop him; so why bother giving him the C ??? i feel bad for kaberle. great player.

That is a very good point. It seems like they’ve been trying to trade him since 08.
